I wear them for hunting and fishing.

The brim for the hat goes 360 and protects your ears from sun burn.

The 360 brim also vents rain water away from your head.

A base ball style hat allows water to run down the side and back of your head.

The 360 brim is often flexible and adjustable.

Get one in Gortex and it is nearly a perfect hat.

I kind of like boonie hats but the hat I'm wearing in the photo is better.  It's broader brim protects more of my face, the top protects my bald head and it has a piece of cloth that hangs down to protect the neck from the sun (all important if you don't some day wish to have a malignant melanoma or basal cell carcinoma).  The soft brim makes it easy to get a rifle or camera strap over my head as well.  In addition, it has a chin strap to hold it on; that's a nice feature when going through thick brush or riding in the back of a truck going 40 mph.

Having just gone through a treatment for pre-cancer cells on most of my face, I'd suggest wearing one.  The treatment is quite painful.  I don't need a special boonie, I just buy earth tone boonies in department stores.

If you are an avid outdoorsman I'd suggest a trip to the dermatologist.

I like them bowhunting as the bill on a baseball type hat hits my string drawing my bow.

Only thing I don't like about boonie caps is that they tend to rub the tops of my ears everytime I move my head even a little bit.  It's annoying when you're trying to listen for movement.  I still wear one though.

I have a boonie hat that I hunt in.  I think it breaks up my visual outline, but that may just be in my imagination.  Mine is cammo on one side and reversable with blaze orange on the other.  Nice to have the option.  I suggest going big so you can pull a thin cap on with the boonie hat over that.  Sometimes I find it's just that cold when sitting still that the extra layers are a must. Then take the under cap off when you don't need it.

i used to not wear a hat when i was saltwater fishing. Now the skin on my face is very black and leather in some places. I like my cowboy hat for rifle hunting but i wear the Boonie for just about anything else cause , it's light, let the heat off my head off with out letting the sun in and when it's rains it's keep my rain jacket hood up and open so i can see were i am going.  If you live somewere like FL or were you have sun most times of the year, you have to be CRAZY not to were a hat.

I wear a boonie hat when bowhunting and turkey because I feel the soft flexibility allows it to break-up the outline of my head, which is good when needing a critter to get in close and not see me. Normally, I wear an orange stocking cap when rifle hunting because by then it's cold and I've got a tall coat collar and even ski-mask protecting the back of my neck. Also the back brim of the boonie rubs the coat collar and drives me nuts every time I turn my head.

I have a Tilley made by Tilley Endurables that I wear everywhere.  Best hat I ever have owned and it has got to be at least 10 years old.

The Tillys are really expensive, but, I'll bet the ones made out of Hemp would last a few lifetimes.

They are no better than the ones sold for less than $5.00 at Walmart.

I'm glad to read that I wasn't the only guy to buy an orange boonie hat from Cabelas!

I like boonie hats for all the reasons mentioned above.

I also like to wear a boonie if I'm going to have a bug net suit on.  This way the it keeps the bug suit off my skin.  If the bug suit touches skin it's not very effective.

I have a Tilley hat also, and a $10 one I bought from Academy Sports.  The Tilly is much much better.  It has a larger brim.  Has an adjustable chin strap, and is much softer.  It also has a larger inside storage area.  I put a bug net that I put over the brim and down over my face and neck in the summer when fishing sometimes or working outside in the early evening when the mosquitos are bad.  Keeps them off my face and neck.  I fold up the bug net and put it inside the Tilley had when not in use.  It also has foam in the top inside that lets it float if you drop it in water while fishing.  I also acquired some type of cooler that you freeze and can place inside the top of the hat for cooling in the summer.  I bought it a little large so I can put on a stretch knit hat under it in the winter while hunting.  If I bow hunt you can snap up one side to avoid the string hitting the brim.  Great hats.

Hi there, new to the site.

I prefer a brimmed hat for the rain and sun protection it offers. I swear I can hide behind it, just roll my head down a little. Steelworking has got the best of my hearing, it seems that the brim catches noise's I used to miss wearing a ball cap.

Just had a good portion of my left nostril removed.  Very painful and not something you want to see in the mirror every day.  Doctor told me the damage from the sun was done when I was a small child.  I'm 62 now.  I avoid the sun nonetheless.  Wear your hat!

I saw a gut back in September on a dove field wearing one. It was 92 degrees and no clouds. I thought the hat worked better at breaking up his outline than a regular ball cap. When I got home it dawned on me I forgot to put sunscreen on the back of my neck (duh!!). I will be wearing a boonie come dove season this year.
