22 Magnum ???
« on: November 13, 2008, 01:39:29 AM »
Hey guys...I'm thinking about getting a 22 mag. Do you think that a magnum is worth buyin if you done own a 22 lr? How big is the advantage of a 22 mag over a 22 lr? If i do get one it will probably be a Marlin model 925M. And how far can one shoot accurately? Thanks!

.22 mag extends your range by about a hundred yards and are genrally pretty accurate out to 150yrds and has alot more smack down than a LR. 8)

I guess it depends on what your going to hunt.
I have had a 22 mag for about 20 years and really like my Marlin 882.  I have shot all kinds of small gavme with it and have carried it Coyote hunting.
I like the new 33 grain Remington rounds but the 40 grain FMJ's work great for tree rats.
The 22 mag is only a 22 mag.  It is not like a 357 or 44 and the 22 LR is not a special version of the 22 Mag.
I try to keep my shots under 100 yards with my two for small game.

Exactly!  I shoot mine out to 150 yards comfortably and the difference between that and a 22LR on a ground hog is amazing.

Use solids on small stuff !
the cost is 2.5-3 times as much so if you want to shoot for fun the LR might make sense , but for hunting the mag. offers alot .
check out the Ruger M-7722 before you buy
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I checked out the 77/22 and still like my Marlin.  not a pretty gun, about as pretty of safety glasses but like corrective safety galsses it works great.

Take a look on the ammo sites for the ballistics of the round.  If you are dead on at 50 yards you are about 10 inches low at 150, and have lost 2/3 energy.  You need to decide if you want to take shots like that.

I use my Magnums (I have 4 so I must like them) for 75-100 yards.  If it is longer than that and I have a choice then I will use one of my 17 rimfires, or my .204.  I never would choose to hunt Coyote with it.  Even chucks at over 100 yards I will take a centerfire and pin them good.

I love my 22 Win. Mag...

We have had "at least" one around ever since it hit the market in 59...  If you want to plink, your probably better off with a 22lr, but for a rimfire hunting gun, or for coyotes, your much better off with the mag...

Which one is the scope dailed in for?
What caliber is the bottom barrel?

Both, and the scope is in "claw mounts" and comes right off.  The mag. is also sighted in, to the rib at 50 yards...  Bottom bbl is 8x57jrs...

Drilling Man, I enjoyed seeing the pic of your firearm just because it is Unique!...I dont see many like it around these parts.

Back to that WMR though...my Savage is very accurate and I stuck with the 40gr CCI HP even when the +V stuff came out because I figured that the extra 10grains bullet weight of the original offered more knock down on those large chucks. I figure that one can add another 50yds over the effectivness of a LR. I would (reserve) using the higher price WMR shells when a LR could be used (such as Squirrel hunting) but have noted that the Mag will knock a Squirrel completely clear of the tree limbs while the .22 would sometimes allow them to scramble to the smallest limb where they would (hang up) before expiring (specially out of a handgun)

I took my first Coyote with the WMR and it was a 40yd broadside shot. I got it but it still ran (like a drunk) for a way's. I still like it for fox but often take the centerfire because the Coyote often shows up first.
