best fur feindly bullet for .223? ( small enrty and no exit)
« on: November 13, 2008, 04:33:32 AM »
Just looking for a better bullet I have been shooting bthp and once in a while they just cause a bad surface wound.  I am just looking for a better bullet that will penetrate and then expand.  not expand on impact.

That`s hard to find in .22 cal. If your really looking for a fur friendly round get a .17 Rem. or the new .17 Fire Ball.

In a .223 it will be hard, don't know if they exist.  In a 17 use the Berger 25gr Match or the now discontinued 30gr Match HP, I use the Berger 30 gr match HPBT (in a 17 Remington), but I only have about 500 left.  If you can find the Winchester white box 45gr HP from Walmart they may be a thing to try, the ones I have used had sort of a star crimp on the nose of the bullet.  Problem you have is that most any .223 bullet is just too heavy for  Coyote (which I presume is what you are killing).  Here is another problem, newer .223's have a fairly fast twist rate, so when you shoot a light bullet that would could be suitable for Coyotes, the bullet is spun up so fast that when it touches anything it just blows up, this is why the origional 22-250's had a 1 in 14 twist, so the normal 1 in 9 twist of most of the newer .223's just don't cut it with light bullets, they go to the right place they just don't work right when they get there.  Guess there is no free lunch, one twist does not fit all.  Nothing is simple is it?  Larry

Try filling the tip with super glue, will slow down expansion just enough to clear hide. Will still blow up and not exit.

bugflipper that is a good Idea with the supper glue, I have thought about using wax to fill up the hollow point but i was afraid it might be unsafe.

Isn’t that sort of the concept of a ballistic tip bullet?

Somewhat. A ballistic tip is soft. It creates a hydraulic effect which blows the thin jacketed bullets up. The harder the material in the nose the more resistance it should have. There is also a gap between the soft tip and this allows soft pure lead to accelerate into the tip molding around the plastic. Since the jacket is thin it cannot contain the expanding lead inside and it  implodes due the hydraulic shock wave.

Less powder.
Slowing down a couple hundred fps can make a huge difference.

223dog,
I've had good luck with the Speer TNT in .257 & .223. I have not shot any coyotes with the .223 but the 87gr .257 TNT at 3600fps shows an exit hole about 25% of the time. Most of that is small bullet fragments so small holes. Be aware if you hit the shoulder the entrance is going to be huge.

Try a Sierra 55gr BTHP gameking.  I think Federal loads this as a factory round in the Premium V-Shok line.  I use this bullet in my 22-250 and rarely have exit wounds on broadside coyotes.

Ive had great success with the 52 grn berger mhp in the 22-250 .Ive had splashes with the 60 grn v max at high velocity but have found it ok in the 223 at reduced velocitys.

For the .223 the 30g and 35g Berger will work just fine.

Killed many coyotes with 55 gr Hornady SXs out of 12" twist .223s.  Always penetrated with no blowup on entry and rarely exited (most all exits were 250+ yard shots.  Loaded them to 3200 fps out of 24" barreled M700V.  For a 9" or slower twist gas gun I used the 52 gr Speer HP.  Again exellent penetration with no exit even on very close shots.
