Encore found its mark...
« on: November 13, 2008, 06:23:17 AM »
OK, I harvested a nice 10 pointer  Saturday evening with my Encore. Probably the tuffest shot I have made and it was only about 22 yards away.
He came along the woods in a picked cornfield and stopped where a doe had just been and it was a poor shooting lane  it was nothung but brush, branches everywhere. I had to stand up on my seat of the ladder stand and finally found a hole to shoot through (4-5" hole about 8 yards away) and the only shot was the head/neck so lets say that it was a bang flop!
This was an ending to a really fun scenario of this buck chasing some does across a corn field and finally stopping by me at my ladder stand, Its neat to see that buck hunting does in heat as they have their heads down and just track until he bumps into the doe then the chase is on all over again....

Anyway I was just going to dress him out and I look up and see a really nice very tall 8 pointer standing just 30 yards away in the corn field edge. he stood there for a couple min then he went into the woods and walked within 10 yards of me until he caught the scent of the dead 10 pointer and he came barreling out in my direction, I thought holly crap I am going to get attacked !  Then he realised that his fighting partner was dead on the ground and I was standing over him. THANKFULLY he decided that it would be a good idea to turn himself inside out and retreat to the woods. I almost pee'd myself when he started comming for my buck  ;D

I used 85 grains of GOEX FFFG black powder and my faithfull Hornady XTP 300 grain bullet and a Harvester sabot.  AWESOME set up !
So here is a couple pics of him and my son.

Thanks, He is not the biggest buck out there but not too bad since they get hammered here pretty hard. Although just a few miles away from this buck a guy just shot what they thought would be a new Minnesota state record TYPICAL but he shot off a tine in the process and it sounds like it will miss the record because of it with a net score of 193 and change !

Thanks, I have taken Jake to "track" for the last 4 years and let him hold the flashlight and let him follow the blood trail to the deer. I have always  had the deer gutted out before his mom brings him out to the woods "for the tracking job" and he just has a blast with it.
Since the deer dropped in his tracks I had to actually drag the deer a little ways to give him a blood trail to follow ;D
Since he is just turned 7, I might try and take him with to sit next year to see if he likes the shooting end on the hunt.
