Bullet designations or acronyms
« on: November 13, 2008, 10:08:39 AM »
 A newbie question-Can someone direct me to a webpage that lists the designations describing various bullet types, like HB,SP,HDSTP, etc.?  I haven't seen anything on GB or anywhere that describes these. Thanks.

Jal, it can be confusing but there is not, to my knowledge, any such source.   We mostly learn what is meant by exposure.  A lot of the "initials" are limited to the maker's own jargon.  Some of them are just what someone writes in an effort to sound knowedgeable or is too lazy to spell out what he means!

Generally,

Rifle: HP = Hollow Point, SP = Spire Point, SPT = Spitzer, RN = Round Nose, FP = Flat Point, CL = Core Lokt (Remington), ST = Silver Tip (Winchester), BT = Boat tail, etc.

Hand Gun: WC = Wad Cutter, SJ = Short Jacket, HJ = Half jacket (same thing as SJ), SWC = Semi-Wad Cutter, LSWC = Lead SWC, TC = Truncated Cone, GC = Gas Check, HB = Hollow Base, BB = Bevel Base, etc.

That's all I can think of off hand, others can add more.  Some terms apply to both rifle and handgun bullets.  Understand that sometimes the terms get used in tandum, like BTHP or HPBT for a hollow point boat tail or GCSWC for gas check semi-wadcutter.

I have no idea what "HDSTP" refers to.  In oils, HD = Heavy Duty,
STP = An oil additive that makes a great case lube!

SP = Soft Point
BT = Ballistic Tip

Let the confusion begin!

Most of the reloading manuals have that info in them.

"Most of the reloading manuals have that info in them."

Yeah, or many do anyway.  Problem is, as Mrloring accurately points out, they don't all agree!    ;)
