I love turnips and the greens from them. My mom would fry a little salt pork (fat back) in a pot, about half what you would use for a pot of  pinto beans she would slice up several big turnips and throw them in the pot with the salt pork and cover with water. Salt and pepper to taste, bring to a boil, reduce heat, let them cook until tender. While they were cooking she would make a big pan of corn bread. I would take the corn bread and break it up in a plate and dump the turnips and juice over it and feast.
She would take the greens, clean and boil them until tender, drain them and squeese the water out of them, fry them in a pan she had fried salt pork in. Just toss them around and heat them through in the pan with salt pork grease. Nothing better.
Always, always eat them with corn bread.,,
This may not be what you are looking for but to me it is good eating.

Nope you are wrong about one thing. That's not "good" eating. Its "excellent" eating.
I don't have any recipes other than pull the turnips up and wash them good, peel the skin off the bulb and cut them up.If they have green tops then clean them and cook along with the roots.I like to boil them in a little water with seasoning meat.Sometimes if the turnips are strong tasting I will add some sugar to help take the bitterness out.
If the turnips don't have green tops on them I will cook the bulbs the same way. This is fine eating. I have eaten the bulbs raw before in salads.

My wife makes a mean oxtail soup with turnips and parsnips in it. I'll have to ask her for the recipe.

peel and dice your turnips and boil in some salted water until tender.Make a white sauce and add some grated cheese.Heat the white sauce and blend in the cheese until melted.Pour over the turnips and mix.

I eat the turnip but love the greens. Boiled with a little bacon fat. (by the way they are better after they freeze, i.e. in the field)

Try browning some whole ducks in bacon fat. When the ducks are browned, add some finely sliced onions and some diced turnips. When the onions are soft put the ducks back in the pot and add enough red wine to cover the bottom of the pot. Cover and roast in a 350 degree oven for about an hour and a half.  When done, remove the ducks and thicken the gravy with a little roux. The turnips will get real sweet and you will have a great meal. I have substituted small deer shoulders as well. Btw, I usually salt and pepper the duck or deer pretty liberally before browning.

Turnip slaw:

4     cups of peeled and grated turnips
1/4  cup chopped bell pepper
1/4  cup thin sliced green onion
1/4  cup mayo
1     Tbs vinegar
2     tbs sugar
1/4  tsp salt
1/4  tsp pepper

Mix all together and serve instead of cabbage slaw or as an appetizer with crackers.

A little late for your past crop but its almost time to plant again :)

Just put a little salt pork in them.  Cook until done.  Then cook some more.  Nope, thats not enough yet.

Another hour.

Now eat.

When I was in the service I picked this up in Thailand
Som Tam (Thai) summer salad
3-5 chili or Thai peppers (or fresh chilies), 3 cloves garlic, 1 chopped tomato,  1 Turnip (sliced very very paper thin like thin paper french fries. You can also use eggplant, Rutabaga and Parsnips. 1 crab or 1lb crabmeat, 1 handful chopped papaya, 3 tbsp. fish sauce or squid sauce
(Its lighter than soy sauce)  2 pieces lemon 1 tsp. sugar.
1. Pound chili peppers and garlic together. Add tomato, Turnips, and crab meat.  mix it with fish sauce, lemon, and sugar.
3. Put papaya in and mix it with a spoon.
4 Chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes
6. serve with fresh sliced cucumber, Rice,  and a leg or rack of lamb off the grill.
7. Kick back on deck with friends and enjoy

(The Cucumber is good for taking away some of the Bite of the thai peppers)

GB back when i was younger we bird hunted anywhere we wanted as everyone let us hunt . Now this was before bottled water . Some days we walked miles and only shot covey shots what a time . Well if a spring or well wasn't close and we happened past a turnip patch we would pull one peel it and eat it , if we had a packet of salt so much the better . I have pulled then when a dusting of snow was on the ground and only the tops were sticking out , don't get excited we were deer hunting then.
You really should give one a try .

I've survived 64+ years without trying one. I see no reason to do so now.

i raised sum turnips this spring and there really was a distinct difference in them and the ones i raised last fall. they just didnt seem as good as the ones that had seen a little cold weather. i know i must of ate a bushel of them last winter out of my deer plots.most of them i either cooked with green beans i had frozen or mixed with taters.i just planted a fall crop so maybe they will be as good as last years.come to think of it the majority of them i ate was after the frost. dont know if that made them better or what.

It has been my experience in the past, that persons of northern persuasion coming south talk "funny".  The best cure for this is to feed them greens, both collards and turnip greens.  To speed the process, add turnips to the greens. ;D

Like AtLaw we eat the greens with the roots cut up in them. Really any greens works. I also use them in a pot roast instead of potatoes. Pot roast, turnips, onion, and carrots. Lots of cayanne prpper sauce. It's fine eating.
