Lots of cayanne prpper sauce. It's fine eating.

Regards,

Eat the cayanne pepper and throw the rest away? ;D

Yep, go to the local carniceria (grocery store for you southern boys). I like rutabaga shredded and boiled with lots of butter.

carni-who!?   ???  You ain't from around here are you boy!?   ::)

I stopped at the grocery store last night like I said.  Got me one a them rut-ta-beggers and a couple turnips, but no parsnips.  But it was late when I finally got home so I'll try to cook 'em up tonight.  Gonna try another store for the other 'nip also.  Might just as well get me a 6 pack while I'm there...  :P

Looks like ya cook 'em all about the same way...  mashed with butter lookin mighty good.

When I got home I had to try to explain to Kathie why I had taken such an interest in root crops lately... she just stood there looking at me like I wuz crazy or sumpin...  :-[   The girl got no curiosity, sense of adventure...  8)

The turnips are of the ubiquitous "Purple Top White Globe" variety; white bottom, purple top.  Strangely enough, the Rutabaga looks just like it but is MUCH larger!  And it looks like it's covered in wax!    :o

Still ain't found no parsnips...

I'll take pictures before cleaning and cooking... and after cooking!   :D

Now you makin me hungry...  :-\  Oh well, another beer or two should cure that!   ;D

You gotta' cook the rutabagas a WHILE.  Don't rush it.  You must have cornbread, (I think its a statute or something), and you must have hot pepper sauce made from cowhorn pepper.  Just  thought you would want to know....

That's the way my grandmother makes it. You all are making me hungry. I gotta go visit my grandmother this weekend!!!!
If you can't get a Cow horn pepper,  just substitute cayenne, jalapeno or seranno chili.
Cow horn is a pepper that grows about 8 plus inches long  and looks like a Cows horn.

All done!  Here they are sans Parsnips.  Couldn't find any...   :(  So, we have them as bought, ready to cook, and ready to serve!   :P

Kathie asked what I was cooking.  When I told her she said she had never had them before, then commenced to eat all the turnips!   :D  Tonight she polished off the rutabager.  The turnips were very mild, almost sweet.  The rutabager was stronger flavored but very good.  I kept thinking it would go well with deer meat!   ;D

I think we'll be eating more of them!  If I ever find any parsnips I'll let y'all know!

I really like rutabaga but it gives you awful gas, or good gas depending on whether you use it for good or evil. ;D

We planted "7 top turnips" this year to try to lure deer within range of the backdoor. Don't have much of a root, but the tops are prolific. And yesterday I saw a set of twins run accross the road from that direction, so maybe its working. Haven't tried eating the greens. Last time I loaded up on polk greens, it worked like a purgative. Almost afraid to chance it!

I like to boil turnips, rutabagas, and potatoes (skin on spuds) with about a head of peeled garlic.
Drain, add butter , sour cream and alittle whole milk. crumbled bacon is good too.
Smash to a desired consistancy. You can add some fresh chives too if you have them.

Enjoy

Mix some mustard greens with the turnip greens say 50/50. Much milder. A little sugar and some red pepper flakes, Chunks of peeled bottoms and pork seasoning. Make some Hoppin John, corn bread and tomato chow chow, dried black eyed peas, onion, boiled pork or fried deer steak or maybe doves, rabbit or chicken. My goodness!
