« on: November 13, 2008, 05:41:15 PM »
with the Gunny. The show will be on the History Channel this Friday. The Gunny is a real gentleman and a scolar as well as a Marine. Yes I mean that. He donates hundreds of hours of work to the US Military every year.

Hope you guys like it.  Sorry it is such late notice.

Now I will be laughed out of Hollywood.  I do not have cable and will have to go to my office manager's house to see it. The cable guy was supposed to hook it up 2 days in a row and did not show up, so we canceled it about a year ago.  I am going to get it so I can see the History channel again.  I have some other pics of the guns and the shoot I will put up as soon as I have a chance.  I have seen some of the Mail Call episodes on youtube.  I am not sure if they are official or pirated.

Bamboo handgonnes?

The show is about U.S. military rifles.  The early part of the show has some hand gonnes.

The most important moment in the whole show gives a lesson for all of us to heed when we shoot cannons.

During a segment on the muzzle loading rifles used during the American Civil War they do a demonstration on the rate of fire that can be achieved with the rifle.  They are loading and firing to determine how many rounds the can fire in 2 minutes.  At about round 7 they had an AD- accidental discharge.  After the shooter poured the powder down the barrel and before he could load the ball the loose powder ignites harmlessly in the air.  Both the shooter and Gunny Ermy jumped.

Don't do rapid fire. Wipe the bore throughly before loading powder.  Observe the between shoot time limits before loading.

Did enjoy the show however. Semper fi!

I was glad to see him back.  I am going to get cable again just so I can see the series without borrowing a TV. LOL This was a pilot so they are going to cover more firearms in detail in the series.  There were a few technical things that could be changed but it was fun.

Very important point.  Rapid fire is almost always where the accident occurs in muzzle loading. I told them the Hou Qiang was particularly dangerous to shoot in succession.  We have to swab twice and visually inspect the bore twice between reloading.  It has a paper lined barrel  and used a paper powder chamber to provide volume with less peak pressure. (like the 40mm's)  The crew appreciated that after witnessing the AD and seeing the crude stuff I was shooting for them.  The Tannenburg gun has a very small chamber which has it's own challenges to make sure it has no residue.  I used commercial powder in both of them for safety.

I feel sorry for the guy who had the AD on national TV but an AD can happen to anyone.  Be careful, especially with you guys, tired of the little 58 and 69 calibers. If that had been a pound of powder and a 24 pounder projectile "all the King's horses and all the Kings men" may not be able to put you back together again. (or even the Doc)

Yeah RocklockI..... The shooting of the BP firearms (even though they did not include cannon or mortars)  was still quite interesting and I too was quite puzzled when that animation clearly showed the recoil spring BEHIND the bolt on the Garand/M14. Kinda surprised that no one else here noticed or at least mentioned it. :)

I mentioned the technical things that could have been changed.  The spring and a few bits of data were some of them.

The cannon will be in the series.  I'll get you a preview.
