We are not in the first grade.  I don't really care who started what.  And I don't know who he is, unless he lives in Alaska, which I doubt.

I did warn him about name calling, as he did not go close to as far as you.  Go re-read you last post, and tell me exact what part of it does not completely cross the line?

You do not directly insult another GBO member.  And that is the end of it.

And P.S. - Money does NOT allow you to break the rules.

Back on topic...

That is a good point, but it does seem to me, as part of the transition, people were shooting what was prevelant.  And now, the .308 itself is no being cast aside for others like the 30BR, and 6mmBR, and for long range competition the BIG 30's, the last thing I read I believe stated the 30-338 lapua mag holds the 1000 yard world record, and the 6mmBR holds the 600 yard record.  Seems those new short fat benchrest casings are doing well for themselves.  But that also makes me wonder, and these cartridges accurate because of cartridge design, or is it the fact that you have to design a completely custom firearm around them which brings accuracy to the package?

Here is a question for you all to ponder. In the old days the long range cartridge of choice was the 30-06.  It dominated competition for decades. Then came the 308. It replaced the 30-06 as the long distance cartridge of choice within a short time.  I know,  the military invented the 308 and anointed it the replacement for the 30-06. but I have read that the scores for long distance competition shooters were so much better than the 30-06 the 308 simply ran the 30-06 out of competition.  Was anybody there around at the transition? Which story is true?

.308 is real good, I've killed a few deer with mine, savage 99.  It is a boring round that doesn't generate much excitement, thats all.  But its all most of us really need.  Its probably impossible to overload it unless your powder is too fast which would be the wrong stuff anyway.  The case capacity limits one pretty quick.

Obviously I've missed something here as it seems the moderator has cleaned it up all ready. Perhaps it's for the best as had I seen it someone might have had to go. You sure better hope Matt doesn't see it cuz he is on a rampage against the personal attacks and name calling right now. He has already said he will ban anyone caught doing it so I suggest whoever the guilty parties are end it rat now.

How can I not love the .308?

I used my uncle's .308 to hunt my first impala
when I was about 11  ;).

Just read this long winded post.  You guys must only own 1 gun or something.  Who cares which is better 30.06 or .308.  I own a 22/250, .270, 7mm.08, .308, 30.06, 30/30, .357 lever action, etc... and would not hesitate to kill a deer with any of them.  The ones at the beginning and end of my list have some limitations, but seam to kill plenty of deer.  My only advice is to stick with something that has a history and will not be discontinued in a couple of years.  I don't rush out and buy a gun until it has a track record (.17 and .204, short mags, super short mags, etc).  You take a gun on a hunt and the airline loses your bag of ammo, can you go to wal-mart or the local gun shop and buy some?  Would stink to go a few thousand miles and have to borrow a gun.

you think 308 is the only cartridge capable of that?

LOL shouldn't that other bullet hole be counted too?

308 boring?
Give me a break. There are no boring cartridges trust me I've shot lots of them and have enjoyed them all. Except for one ultra light 8mm Remington mag but that was not the cartridge's fault. The 308 is very efficient cartridge it's record speaks for it self. And it speak very well. I get the same argument when folks see my 308. It's ok but it's no 30.06. Here's a news flash the 30.06 is ok also but ain't no 308.
I've owned a few 06s it is a great cartridge I can't think of anything negative about it. It is personal preference that I own a 308 not that is better or special.
Whats so special about the 308? Nothing. Try one out you may just like for what it is. A very good cartridge.
