Russian M91/30 Back Bored ???????
« on: November 14, 2008, 04:41:13 PM »
I just bought a new to me M91/30 and the guy told me it was back bored an inch or 2. He said it was done for better accuracy? Is this a bad or good thing? I have never had a gun like this. He said the rifling isn`t at the end of the barrel anymore? I love this gun, like it was made for me :)

Thanks-Jack

Counterbored is common.  If you are a "serious" collector you may ask for Non Counterbored rifles.  The reason for the bouterbore is that the crown on these rifles could become pretty beat and definately affect accuracy, your bud is correct.  Counterboring is a way to sharpen the "crown" of the bullet leaving the lands and grooves without chopping off 2" of barrel and recrowning and redoing sites.

If its "made for you" and enjoyable....SHOOT AWAY with a smile.  Love the 91/30's myself.  I have enjoyed starting to load for the 7.62x54r as well.  A real nice round.  I'm assuming your has been refurbed and looks all pretty?  Enjoy.

Back boring is a bit of a misnomer at best. It is generally applied ONLY to shotgun barrels which are not so much "back bored" as OVER BORED. They are larger in inside diameter than is normal for a given gauge the full length of barrel minus the chamber and choke.

So to apply it to a rifle is totally incorrect.

Slayer....for clarity.  Your 91/30 has been drilled down from the muzzle to sharpen the lands at the point the bullet leaves the connection with Barrel and bullet.  Prior to "counter boring" (the term I have always heard) that was your "crown".   One of the inspection points of buying a used rifle is to inspect the crown for damage or corrosion.

Look around at all your rifles.  I have one which the barrel comes forward real nice and then at the end it drop 1/16th of an inch and is crowned.  This helps prevent whacking up the crown and damaging the end which could send your bullet errant.  So if its dropped back 1/16th or 1.5" I suppose its the same idea huh?

The best part is when you go to clean your Mosin (breech to Muzzle of course) you will notice your brush will break loose prior to exiting the barrel.  You can feel the difference that last 3/4 Inch.

Shoot on partner and shoot often.

I don't know about the Bayonet.....I'd have to dig one out.  I don't shoot my 91's with Bayonet attached but do so on the 44's as I bought into the Harmonic balance thingy on the 44's.  I do recall that once on the 91/30 you may not get it off!!  Rumor is it was just left on at all times.  I have one thta goes on and off easily and I hear I am lucky.

I don't recall the look of the end of a 91'30 bayonet.

You are right, it is a very tight fit on there!! It was very tough getting it off. It doesn`t help that the bayonet is like new. I will have to keep it oiled very well if I ever put it on again.

Slayer,

I bit of 240grit wet or dry around a wooden dowel chucked in a drill followed up by some 400 grit of the same and it will go on and off just fine.

Wrap the paper so it just fits inside and then hit it with a little oil.  Be sure to wear old clothes and safety glasses to keep the oil out of your eyes.   Don't have to go fast.  Give it a few passes, clean and try when it feels good hit it with the 400 grade clean, oil and you are done.

there is two reasons for the "chisel tip" on the bayonet.
one is to be a makeshift flathead screwdriver to disassemble the rifle.
the other is that it would tear a wound rather than make a puncture.
A tearing wound does more damage.

I thought it was because soldiers were constantly stabbing themselves while using a pointed bayonet to open cans. ;D

I believe these rifles are counterbored because of the use of the clean rods the end of the bores were damaged so they counterbored them to bring back the accuracy.  I don't think it really hurts the value any just look at the finnish 91/30's that are mostly counterbored and still bringing decent dollars in there prices. Its part of there refurb history too.
