One pistol powder
« on: November 15, 2008, 06:09:17 AM »
I apologize if this has been asked recently. While reading the recent post about which rifle powder you would choose if you could only have one. I also thought about which pistol powder would one recommend if they could only have one. I like some (probably most) of you am thinking of buying a lifetime or near lifetime supply of loading supplies within the next couple of years due to the outcome of the election. Myself I am going to nominate Unique as my "large quantity" pistol powder due to its versatility in most if not all pistol rounds and shot guns as well. Then buy a smaller quantity of Blue Dot for hotter loads. Please reply with your choice for your favorite pistol powder. Charlie

I just read the "sticky" about Blue Dot powder. I would like to know what peoples choice is for a "hot" pistol powder along with your general every day powder if it is different.

Unique!  Hands down it is the most flexible pistol powder on the market.  From light loads in pistol calibers to medium hot loads capable of taking deer/pigs at reasonable ranges.

I completely agree with your choice of UNIQUE!!!

What do you mean by hot loads? I mean Unique will support hot loads, unless your intent was more looking for a better MAG pistol powder. Then 2400/H110/296/#9 would fit the bill nicely. My choice is H110/296.

If I only had to have one, unique would be the way to go.  I do really like titegroup, but titegroup is no good for hot loads with large bullets, doesn't get you much velocity.  Unique gets you a little more speed in large calibers.  Titegroup is the most economical.

H110 and 4227 are a good way to go if you want to shoot hot, but they take a lot more powder.

For all around use though, you can plink, hunt, and play with whatever caliber you please using unique.  Just be ready to clean your gun  ;-)

Unique and IMR 4227 , both fit the bill as a better than ave. pistol powder , and in more than a few cases they do a great job as a cross-over powder for rifles .

For what its worth I buy Unique in 8 pound kegs .  ;D

cwlongshot, I said medium hot loads, not those that H110 or 296 give, but at the bottom end of what they do well.  To cbourbeau32, I also use Unique with traditional 45-70 loads in my # 1.

Charlie

Off the top of my head , 218 Bee , 22 REM JET , 224GNR , 223 , 30/30 and 45/70 , these are all loaded with soft lead cast bullets and the speeds are kept to below 1400 FPS . They make for great plunking rounds as well as real good short range varmint loads .

The IMR4227 works very well for many rounds up to 25/06 with jacketed bullets , the speed is about 1/2 of what a full power load would be but the groups will run with the best of them only about 8" lower @ 100 .

I don't load for pistol, only revolver, .357/.44/.460, all magnums and all hunting/range guns. I shoot primarily jacketed bullets. If I could have only one powder for all three, it would have to be Lil' Gun. In all three, it seems to be the most consistent and accurate even when adjusting loads by several grains. It's not as economical as Unique....but you said only one.

Accurate #5 if you can find the stuff.

I use Unique for most handguns. 2400 for hotter stuff and Trail Boss in pip squeaks.

+1 for Unique, probably the most vesatile powder out here. There are powders tha get better velocity, but do not do well at low velocites, Unique kind of covers it all.

Blue Dot will work in almost any handgun I shoot. In a pinch it will also work for some smaller rifle rounds.

W231/HP-38 is a good choice for mild to moderate pistol ammo.

I'm not a big fan of Unique. I never found a "one size fits most" to do me much good. If I could only have 2 pistol powders it would be AA#2 and AA#9.

AA#2 for target loads in everything from 380 to 45 Colt and AA#9 for the big boys. I even have a load for the 45AR and a 240gr LSWC using AA#9. It drives that slug right at 1000fps out of a M625JM.
