7MM RM and Berger VLD's
« on: November 15, 2008, 06:21:37 AM »
I should receive 300 Berger 168gr VLD's Monday
and am doing some load research.
With the VLD being somewhat new there is not a lot of info out there.
I had Walt Berger send me some data but its pretty generic.

One powder I have found to be pretty popular is Reloder 22.
My first Question is a newbie safety question.
Looking at the Berger data it list RE-22 w/ a start load of 62gr
and the Lyman book list RX22 w/ a start load of 57gr.
Are both of these Reloder 22 with different prefixes?

If anyone has any other input I would appreciate it.

By the way the riffle is a
Rem #700, 7MM RM with a factory 24" barrel.

Thanks,
Mike

And on the safety question I had,
I am really surprised I did not get a response  :-\

Yip, been a bad boy, no one wants to play.
I was waiting to see if anyone was going to bite for you because I've never heard of rx22. For the re-22, 62 is starting, 65 max in Hogdon 26th edition.
Sorry I can't help you on the re-22 I use 3100

Lyman abbreviates the reloader powders with an RX, it's explained in the front of the book.  Berger's load data usually seems pretty conservative but that one I don't know about.  Start lower and work up as usual, VLDs tend to like a little jam into the rifling.

Gamehauler, i'm trying to work a load in my 7mm mag with 140 gr vlds with imr 4831. i haven't gotten the groups that i expected. let me know how the reloader 22 works for you since i have some of that on my bench. i started out on the upper end with 63 gr of 4831 and was getting about 1 in groups. i backed off and tested a min load this morning and got better groups. just let me know how your groups work out.

PJ,
Got my 168 VLD's today and will try to pick up some RX 22 on the way to my blind for my Elk hunt tomorrow.

May take me a while to figure out a load since there is not a lot of info I have found to find a good starting point.
These bullets seem to be REAL picky about seating length for each rifle.
Once you find a load that seems pretty good you may want to start playing with the bullets just into and just out of the lands, which seems to be where they like to be.

I will keep you posted.

thanks mike. i'm not getting the accuracy that i had hoped for out of them. i'm thinking about giving up on the bergers and going back to the gamekings. let me know how yours turns out.
