Shooting a hand gun of sand bags
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:54:05 AM »
What is the proper postion for shooting a hand gun off sand bags? Should I just rest my wrist? Or can I rest the BBL? When shooting at 50 yards some times target looks like a buck shot pattern but when in the field I can hit distant rocks and tin cans steel gongs. But I'm also standing up too.  Revolvers I shoot or Colt 8" Anaconda ,6" S&W 25-5 Ruger GP 100 6".

If I'm shooting to test loads, trying to get the absolute tightest groups possible I rest the front of the frame on a bag or two and then get a bag under my wrists so they are comfortably supported too, and sometimes I like to get something under my chin too.

Ihave made the mistake of resting my bbl. on the sandbag. (44 mag (hot loads) It sure blackened the top of the sandbag.

Front of the frame is worse about getting blasted by the barrel cyl gap, first time I tried I figured there was probably a 50-50 chance it would destroy my bad but it never has, just blackens them. I don't suppose there is anything wrong with resting your barrel on the bags, it just feels more secure to have the gun farther forward. You realize that this will probably affect the point of impact of the gun. Don't zero the sights this way unless you know that this is the way you are going to be using it, like in a blind or something.

I do rest my hanguns on the bag under the frame forward of the cylinder but I protect the bags by using a 8"x8" piece of indoor/outdoor rug on top of the bags or I have used the lower part of a old pair of jeans to fit over my bags. I have ruined a couple bags because of the flame cutting coming from the barrel cylinder gap.

Usually when shooting from bags....I use a 10 by 10 piece of scrap leather to save my bag , the flame from the cylinder will destroy your bag if you shoot very much. Also rest the "chin"  of the revolver ( the part just ahead of the trigger guard ) on the bag.  Then usually my pistol case , which will flatten out like a rug , under my elbows.  The inside of my elbow , the bony part , takes a beating when shooting the cannons.  With the revolver resting back on the "chin" , I've found I really don't need anything under my wrists.   I have put bags under the grip....for me that was a bad idea...my SRH in heavy 454 loadings had no where to slide...it really hammers ya when doing that.....its better with out the grip bag for me. Basically its what suits you  and works best for you.    Good shooting !
