How to keep barrel dry when hunting
« on: November 15, 2008, 02:57:43 PM »
Hunted in steady drizzle all day today unfortunately no deer. Got home pushed bullet out of breech and noticed powder at base of sabot was wet. Is there something you could put over the end of the barrel and shoot without hurting accuracy

Leave it at home and hope i dont see anything  ;D

I never had to cover the muzzle, always carry the rifle pointed down but you can use that clear plastic wrap and then wrap a rubber band around it

Traditions makes a kit of rain gear - their muzzle cover is a little thicker than a finger cot so it stays intact longer

Black plastic electricians tape has always worked for me.  Take a piece across the muzzle for inch or so on the sides, another piece long enough to wrap around the barrel and secure the tag ends.  Cheap, easy, effective.  I carry the tape all the time in my pack anyway.

I've used just about everything there is to try, all that's been mentioned so far plus balloons, best I've found is duct tape, just don't leave it on forever and it comes right off when you want it to, not before. A little WD40 will remove any adhesive residue if you do leave it on too long.  Range shooting tests show it has no effect on accuracy, just keeps the water out.  ;)

I didn't mention that I've hunted for years with all kinds of muzzleloaders in the rain without any protection at all and never had a misfire.  I assume you're walking around with the muzzle up.  I don't do that in the rain.

Thanks for all the relpies. I had thought about the finger cots but wasn't sure how it would effect accuracy. I did try to keep the barrel pointed down but it was just nasty yesterday and if you don't try you won't get one .

I shot two bucks last week...on each shot I had a piece of Scotch tape over the end of my Encore.  Doesn't affect bullet in any way, in fact I'm sure it blows off well before the bullet gets near the muzzle.  If I'm using a sidelock I carry a little piece of inner tube that I put between the hammer and nipple. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  :)

I bought a pack of finger cot's a few years back. They have worked perfect on my Encore. I do roll them up and then down over the barrel..carefully past the front sight and it seals good around the barrel. I swear I can see them expand when I pull the trigger...Drop

I like to cut a finger off the cheap latex gloves that I carry anyhow to dress out your deer.  Also a small piece of the same between the hammer & nipple.

Never had a problem using a muzzleloader in the rain and have never put anything over the muzzle. Don't usually carry it muzzle up enough to catch water.

Bingo you got it, i use saran wrap on my modern guns too with an elastic band.  I saves a lot of cleaning time too when were out in the pouring rain. The bore stays dry.  The saran wrap is paper thin too, so we just shoot right thru it.
