PRIMER POCKET ENLARGEMENT
« on: November 16, 2008, 10:00:35 AM »
I would like to get advice about the possibilty of locating a common ,low caliber, case that is built strong enough to be able to enlarge its primer pocket from small rifle to large rifle primers. IF ,such a thing exists. My purpose is to use a shortened one of these cases ,in a muzzle-loader breech plug. The current thing is to use a 209 shotgun primer  but these have more power than needed and are dirty. Standard caps and small rifle primers don't ignite the new Buck Horn 209 powder very well and its cleanliness is much appreciated. A trial of a shortened .244Rem. case with its large rifle primer worked very well, but its rim and base diameters make it hard to fit into the current breechplug designs. It hinges ,I suppose ,on the design and mterials of the case in mind ,and the operating pressures the modified case wouldbe subjected to. You people just might have the answer !  OR 10-15 of them even.   Kody

Kody

Have you looked at say one of the 25 auto plugs and using a Remington 7 1/2 Small Rifle Primer , those little suckers will throw a ton of fire in a small package . May be a easier fix than trying to mod a case to up-size the primer pocket .

How about the 10mm case?

I 've seen the results of an imprompto "pressure check" where a .35 cal. ML fired a patched ball using just 209 primers for propellant thru a Chronograph and then repeated using two types of small rifle primers, Win Sm P  and Win Sm R.  The 209s spread was from 221 fps  to 381 fps with the Win 209 doing 336 fps.  The Sm P got 116 fps and the Sm R got 143 fps.  The 10 mm case is a lot larger than I want. Most of these breech plugs are 5/8" dia. minus thread depth.  If you want CLEAN performance, you have to use BH209. If you want that to ignite you can use 209s BUT there seems to be too much power and "flyers" occur. Lg rifle primers have been jury-rigged and worked very well, enough to seek a Lg Rifle-primed case that will fit in a 5/8" breechplug.      Ken

Get the other breech plug for your gun and use a musket cap.  A musket cap will ignite about anything.
As for the 209 primer causing the dirt, NOT, it's the powder.  Change powder brands.  You can also try winchester primers, they are a little hotter than CCI and Federal.
