help!!!

thinking of taking  my k 98 out to deer hunt. my ? is how does the iron sights work on the gun.  if the slide is all the way back what is my range.  does any one have a chart or way of setting it to different numbers for diff. yards.  i hopr i'm making sence.

I tried American 8mm ammo in my Yugo 48 and was surprised to see that the sights were on for 100 yards.  This would not be true with  ammo loaded to European specs.  I suspect that the American companies loaded their ammo light, so that shooters would be able to use their rifles without resighting them.  As to complaints of lack of power, not everything needs to be a .323 Belted Brontoslayer to work on whitetails.  Even if you accept the premise that American 8mm is no better than a .32 Winchester, the .32 has killed a lot of deer over the years.   Of course, it was shot mostly by guys who knew deer hunting,  but did not read magazines to find out they were underpowered.

Use the barleycorn front sight the same way you would a Patridge sight, even with the top of the rear sight and centered, and you should do fine.  Do I need to say, shoot the rifle on paper before you take it to the field?  Shoot no further than you can keep all shots on a nine-inch paper plate.

Old Timers last statement is my first question....you have fires this on paper correct?  Center the top of the ^ with the back sites and see how its mapping at 100 yds.  I wouldn't be shooting a 250 yd shot with open sites anyway.....100-150 tops (for me)

I keep all M 98 variants with the rear sites slid closest to the shooter.  I have always fel this to be 100 meters......point is it is your closest setting period.  be comfortable with how it maps out at first setting and second setting.  Adjust accordingly.  If you have some Milsurp ammo laying around shoot 40 rounds to see how its mapping.  THEN shoot 10 rounds of your intended hunting rounds to see the comparison.  I bet you will find that with time you will learn exactly where that 98 is hitting and at what setting.

I bet you would find that the person who carried that rifle in service could snap it up and fire to hit the intended target after getting to "know his rifle".  So my challenge is to get to know your rifle.....then hunt on.  You'll do fine.  U.S. 8mm is NOT underpowered.  Anyone who says so is failing to apply logic, period.  I may agree that it is not loaded to the same capacity in all situations but guess what NEITHER IS anything else.  load your own if you wish, I love it.

That cartridge is fully the equal of a 30-06..
(or should I reverse that since the 06' was designed
because of the 7.92x57)
American manufacturers load it only a couple hundred feet per
second faster than a 30-30! My reloads throw a 170 grain
bullet at almost 2700 fps. Most American companies load to about
2300. That is grossly underpowered. Within about 150 yards
a whitetail would never know the difference. Move that same whitetail to 400
yards and it would probably be foolish to attempt the shot with American stuff.
