First deer with the 444!
« on: November 16, 2008, 02:25:42 PM »
Well my right arm is still messed up with nerve damage so I have been shooting out of ground blinds with rests since last year.  I got brave or stupid today and got in my favorite ladder stand.  I shot a few practice shots off hand left handed standing before the hunt, and it's doable to about 75 yards. Must be something about the grip of the lever gun because its stable until my arm gets tired I was in the stand with my 444ss and a lone doe walked up behind me tooled around for 20 min. or so then turned to leave.  Now or never was the only thought as I shot through two cedar trees and smoked her through the lungs. That 265 gr. leverevolution made a hole big enough that my grandma could have found the blood trail. 15 yards til she crashed.  Now I have meat I can look for that monster  ;D

Way to go NYSdeerslayer!
I hope you connect with the monster you are looking for. If you do please remember to post a pic or two.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Up near the St. Lawrence river.  Not many big ones shot around here yet.
Happy hunting!

This is my first deer taken with my new 444 Marlin.  Buck was bedded down watching some does.  He was looking away and didnt even see me coming, even as I rested my rifle on a pole fence at approximately 110 yards away.  The shot selection was very questionable with open irons, but with my results from the range (3 shots -1 1/4 inches at 100 yards) and feeling very steady on my rest, I took the shot.  The bullet entered the back of the spinal column in the neck about 2 inches below the skull and exited through its mouth.  Its head just dropped and the deer never even twitched.  My other two kills with the rifle on white tail does were both just as fast.  This season, I fired the rifle at game three times, got three kills and none of the animals took another step after i pulled the trigger.  I love my 444 ;D
Gotta git'me a bigger ice box

Congrats to both of you!  My 444P hasn't been out to dance with the deer yet, maybe next year.  However my old girl, 1955 35 Rem, took a fine doe this year.  This is the first hunting season I've had these guns, so next year will be for the 444.  DP
