loads for 2" barrel S&W model 36
« on: November 16, 2008, 04:19:41 PM »
I purchased a model 36 today and will be looking for loads that get the most out of the 2" barrel. What powder/bullet combo do y'all use? Charlie

I have had a couple of these, currently only have a 638.

For carry I like FACTORY, 158gr lead HP +P ammo.  I HAD some police 130 +p+ ammo that shot really well, but availability was a problem.

For handloads, Bullseye and a 148 HBWC. NICE, lite recoil and accurate!!

One of my 60's was extremely accurate and shot right to the point of aim out to about 50 yards. I astounded many many people with what I could hit with that little revolver!!!  My brother-in-law now owns it. My 638 is also very good, I carried that little revolver for many years and it shows it. It now serves duty as a bed stand gun. J frames are near and dear to my heart.

CW:  I have found most 38 caliber revolvers, including all my snubbies and fixed sight revolvers to have sights regulated to 50yds.  That is supposed to be the max effective range for a fixed sighted combat handgun.  Granted, the sights on the snubbies are very basic but if you can hit at 50 yds, try ringing the 100 yd gong with your snubbie, it is a ball.

I posted my preferred load of 3.8 gns of WW231 under a 200 gn swc for my snubbies and 38 spl.  It is a very accurate bullet and is loaded to standard pressures.  It penetrates more than any other 38 round I have tried in my snubbies.  I have little faith in 'ballistic statistics' that portend what a bullet is supposed to do, based on penetration in ballistic gelatin or other ballistic medium, or the notion of a particular slug delivering all its energy to the target.  I know how a 200 gn 38 caliber will perform at even slow speeds and that is exactly what I want.

In my neck of the woods there is this group of old guys, me included, and occasionally we all get out to the range on the same day and hang out the gongs at the 100 yd line and bang away.  Usually, before we begin, there is always someone at the range who will question what we're doing - 'what, are you guys nuts?  That's all the way to 100 yds, you can't hit with a snub nose out to there, what are ya wasting your ammo for?'  They usually stand there a bit dumfounded when we start ringing the gong.  One of the funniest guys in the group always turns to someone else on the line before he begins shooting and asks 'hey, I forget, do we take just a half front sight or a full front sight for the 100 yd line?'  Of course, he already knows the answer and then proceeds to ring the gong with all five shots..........most of us just snicker.............

Great story Mikey and by the way thanks for the load data here and over in the S&W forum. Charlie

What do you want to do with the rounds you load in the M36?

I have a M60 in 38spl with a 3"bbl that I like to shoot a real heavy load out of. I'm not sure of your needs and the load is outside of present day data.

Folks a long time ago though thought it was a normal 38spl round!  :o

My target load for the 38 is a home-cast 160gr H&G #290BB, straight wheel-weights and lubed with a homebrew, over 3.5gr Bullseye. Either with a firm crimp in the crimp groove or without crimp and seated to within the last .030" of the last driving band.

I use this same load in all of my "L" frames for competition.

The wife even likes to shoot it in her M586 6".

Hope this helps.

I have a Smith Model 637 Airweight and my favorite .38 Special load is a 158 gr. LSWC over 4.6 grs. of Unique.  It's also the same measurement as a .5cc Lee scoop.  I get plenty of hitting power with this load and I find it to be very accurate in my gun.  Recoil is just right for my grip.
I also load just the reverse in a .357 mag. round for my Marlin 1894C levergun...6.4 gr. of Unique (.7cc scoop), same bullet, for the right combination of power for the kind of rifle shooting I like.  I like using just one type of bullet for most of the shooting I do...it's cheaper, too.  Of course, for plinking, my .38 Special rounds work great in my Marlin also.  I've got several boxes of 125 gr. LRNFP cowboy bullets that I need to load up for the .38...you hardly feel the recoil at all. But for carry, it's a 158 grainer for me...no gun I know of can launch a 158 gr. bullet in such a small package as can a .38 snub...often ridiculed as a "wimpy" shooting platform,  but I'm a believer in snubs.  I wouldn't want to be on the business end of one. ;D

Smith Model 637 Airweight

Me too! Like this most of the time.

I carry factory ammo in this one though. Mainly because it is such a short barrel and an alloy frame. If this was an all stainless model, it would get the same load the M60 gets! ;)

By the way, that load launches a 160gr LSWC out of it's 3" tube right at 1100fps! I would think I would agree with you about not wanting to be on the business end of either one of them! ;)
