jvs, I am not attacking you or anyone else, but I would like your ideas of just what the government CAN do. I for one wish they would get the hell outa my way.
Econ mys cycle as proof of 1929 and once before that. It is usually caused by greed and over priced values. I don't think the government can do anything but make the situation worse by meddling. Roosevelt was the great meddler that kept us in the depression LONGER with his new deal, which was actually inventing jobs to know where. Some good came out of it no doubt, but it merely prolonged the Great Depression. This is not MY opinion but the opinion of history looking back.

Yes they were SHOOTALL, and historians have documented that these programs kept the U.S. in depression longer than the rest of the world. Had not Hitler done his deal, the European countries were coming out of depression while the U.S. deepned.

I rarely do this, but I will post links that you should look into.  Peter Shciff has been dead-on with his predictions about this economy so far and his  look into the future should giver you an idea what Gov't should be doing.  Peter Schiff is/was an Economic Adviser to Ron Paul.

It is NOT Gov't's job to get out of your way, nor is it the job of Gov't to meddle and pry into your business.   Without Gov't meddling we wouldn't be a Service Economy nor would we be exporting all of the jobs overseas with Walmarts being the biggest employer in some communities.  This is a Country of extremes, either Left or Right.  When all along a steady course down the middle is what people really want.

You don't have to bother telling me what you think of Peter Schiff and his predictions.

I don't care what you think.

Overall, the job picture in my area is going steady, but there are segments of employment that really fell apart.  Home building and auto jobbers are the worst hit.

The problem is that it is like water circling a drain, with more and more segments getting caught in the whirlpool.  Soon everyone will be caught up in it.

If we don't get real leadership out of Washington D.C., the last Great Depression will look like a Cake Walk.

Time is running out quickly for somebody to do something.   The time table is now down to weeks.

Dale,

If you want to go Deer Hunting and you have enough gas to get here and back, you are welcome.  I can outfit you with a rifle for a day.

I don't know exactly what part of the state you are from, but anywhere in Pa is usually not more than a 4 hr drive on the Interstates from here.

How many kids you got?

Thank you very much for the offer JVS. I think I am going to go with my neighbor the first 2 days. That was very nice of you to offer though. Dale

Seems that the auto unions will not budge to help the situation. Anybody know how much the assay workers make??? If theres no give and take, and no bailout, it will be a disaster. POWDERMAN.  :( :( :( :( :( :(
Powderman : They ask us to vote  to open the contract 2 years ago in Jan. I spent quite a bit of time researching factories taking cuts I couldn't  find one case where the cut saved the factory . So we voted no, if we are going out we might as well go out at full pay. The stock holder news book they sent me that summer announced that the board had voted the November before to close our plant. We made transfer cases we made a little under  what the big 3 did . If you really want to know p.m. me  we had fair insurance . we did make out fairly well on paid holiday's. If we had taken cuts, all we would have done was help pay for moving our jobs to Mexico

I have been off since July 6Th I start  on 12/1 at the University  hospital I will have to move but that is part of life . ;D anyone in south western Ohio got a big truck and some time to help move in a couple weeks ;D

ROY. Tough decisions for sure. A union spokesman was on the news last night and he said, we won't budge or give anything. Theres such a thing as being too tough. A company in the Eastern part of Ky was at a critical point a couple of years ago and told the union they would be forced to close down if the members refused to help. They refused, the plant closed for good, all those jobs lost. Something to think about. POWDERMAN.  ??? ???

We gave on insurance  and profit sharing and several other things It wasn't enough. I did a bunch of research on giving consessions  in the auto industries  I didn't find a case where is saved the jobs. union or not. Union officials at the international level aren't much different than the upper management  when it comes to caring for the rank and file. Also there are a lot of people that are "big union" when it benefits them, and every man for themselves when "big union" doesn't benefit them. I have called many on it.  I've had more than one person so mad you could see the flames in their eyes. but I spoke the truth. Most of the time the decision has all ready been made  to close . I don't see any use in financing them taking your jobs out of the country. Now if a company came to the workers and open the books and said we all have access to the numbers and we go up and down together  that might be different . when it comes right  down to it the biggest reason they take manufacturing to third world countries is the lack of safety and environment laws.

ok guys here is the deal. If you are not afraid of working outdoors in all types of weather, working away from home, or getting paid for 12 hours work per day when u actually do maybe 4 then go here and apply. Kirbycorp.com . We are always hiring on the river. Pay is not great to start out, but your raises depend on you. The first one comes in about 3 months, then 6 months, then so on. You start out around 36k per year, and after 18 months ( once again depending on you and your willingness to get ahead) you can be on track to entering the wheelhouse program . You get your river pilots license and you can make from 80k to 120k per year depending on if you want to work 6 months or 8 months out of the year. You can have work schedules of 14 days on 14 days off, 20 days on 10 off, 21 on 21 off, 28 on 14 off. We are the largest company working the inland river system. The company offers great benefits and insurance. The jobs are out there, some people are just afraid of moving out of their comfort zone. Just because you used to work in an office dont mean you can only take an office job.

A report on TV showed that hourly wage was about the same for a union GM worker and a non-union Toyota worker (both working in US plants), but total compensation was $72/hr for the union guy and $48/hr for the Toyota guy.

The popularity of foreign cars, from the Volkswagen Beetle of the 60's to the many Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Kia, et al models today demonstrates the long-term, continued incompetence of management in the US car industry and greed in US auto unions.

I work in the medical industry. Someone wil be paying my wage, whether it's insurance companies or the government. That is, until the whole system goes in the crapper.

I DON'T NEED TO HIDE BEHIND ANY STEWARD  >:(
I do my job and am good at it. I hate to tell you this but today the U.A.W.  doesn't hire like they did in the 70's. In 2001 when I hired in at the last job. the process was:
First show them documented 16000 hours in  your trade before you could even get an Application  then you had to take a 3 hour general mechanical test .All most 3000 took that test. If you scored enough on that test you took another trade specific test. Around 500 got to the second test. they picked about 100 to interview. They  hired 42 I was the third one hired. by the way I just started a new job. with benefits and such it is just as good as the last one.
If you want to make 50K  Let me tell you how. First quit whining about about other people making more than you do. decide what field you want to work in.  Start at the bottom (in plumbing that involves a shovel and dirt) get there early and be the last one working at the end of the day. you will get noticed. you goal is to be the best damn (insert what you want to be here) out there.  spend 15 years becoming the best damn (insert what you want to be here) apply and get the big money job. can you fix a machine  that heats a steel shaft that weighs 12 lbs to cherry red and has water running through the power lines? or a gas tower in an operating room? or how about  running a 5 foot dia. storm sewer line? Have I made good money and not did much? yep but I was responsible for 1.6 million sq ft of factory making sure 600 hp compressor where running right,I was stop shut down or fix any problem that occurred plumbing wise.so either bring your tools and see if you can keep up ,or don't__________ worry about how much I make!!! At 6:30 A.M this morning I was in full surgical scrubs working on  the vacuum in an operating room. So tell me I it happens to be your loved one in that operating room  who do you want working on that me or a kid just out of high school making minimum wage?

Dale I am in my 23rd year of doing plumbing work  I have done everything from plunging toilets to installing the second biggest hyperbaric chamber in the state of Fl. I was the first one on the job and the last one to leave  for many years. I have paid my dues It just iratates me when some one complains about my rate who isn't willing to walk in my shoes. We lost a half a million jobs in the U.S. last month. And I landed a good job ;D  for the last ten to twelve years any where I have worked, when It has to be right  I get sent. I am Also not above telling some one I will either do it right or I won't do it.

Sorry Roy-Didnt realize you were one of the hard-working union plumbers. I have just had bad experiences in the two unions Ive been in (painters-allied trades, and the roofers union.) Also my father in law was a driver (teamster) for a liquor distributor that went on strike earlier this year for four months. They settled a worse contract than they were originally were offered before they went on strike. (He no longer works there because he was the only steward that was against the strike.) I make almost fifty a year in a non-union machine shop that fortunately is still busy right now so I wasn't taking a shot at you with that comment. I was referring to the whole union mentality that protects the slackers and tells the hard workers to slow down because it makes them look bad. The shop I work in is approx. 600 machinists under 8 foreman. There was a unionization movement about 5 years ago that was pushed by the older workers that failed because most of us would have made LESS had we went union. The company had really been focusing on lean manufacturing the last few years and it is paying off now. I had just gotten home from a ten hour shift and was a little crabby when I posted that comment so Im sorry- shouldn't have gone off on you without knowing anything about you.

In addition to the last post-
I was the oldest boy in a family of nine kids, at 11 our parents told us we were old enough to work, if we didn't like the bike, clothes, etc. they provided then we could get a job and buy our own. I got fired from my first job at age 11 because I was more interested in watching the potato harvester than picking cucumbers. The next summer when I was 12 I worked at a radish farm bunching radishes. You know the little bunches you buy at the grocery store? Five bunches to a pile, ten piles to a bushel, 1.00 per bushel is what we got paid , 2 cents per bunch. If you were really fast you could do 15 bushel an hour. The 12 year olds werent that fast because our hand were too small. At age 15 or 16 you could do a bunch in two picks, so you could do 15 bushel an hour. When I was 14 I got to go out and mow the sod fields after the radishes were picked, washed and packed. When school started I bagged potatoes after school. That was work! How many of you have 14 year old kids that can stack a pallet as high as your head with 100 pound bags of potatoes?. That was when I was just a kid, so when I hear people say they work their butts off, I just bite my tongue or walk away.

While reading this I was reminded that long time regular here jbtazgrabber told me on Dec. 2 that he was laid off that day. He has no computer at home and has been reading and posting here via computer at work. So at least for now he is no longer with us here at the forums due to his job situation or lack of job. Hopefully things will pick up for him and he'll be back before too long.

Mirage1988, I hear what you are saying. My father put me in a tobacco field when I was 11 so I could learn what farm life was like. I cropped tobacco, picked tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, mustard and turnip greens. I drove a tractor breaking land when it was freezing outside and plowed crops in 100 degree weather. I worked with a lot of different farmers during my school years so I could buy cloths. My father died when I was 14 and I'm proud today that he put me in the fields when I was a kid. It sure taught me what a good job is and to respect it.

One thing that has always made me laugh is when I see some guy on the internet, whining about how bad off they are financially. My  momma was very poor as a child, they had no electricity, running water or cental heat if my grandparents would have spent money on those things there would have been none left for food. Now fopr those out there that live in an area where there are no jobs, I feel sorry for you and hope you move. I know here there are jobs, albeit some are hanging chickens at the kill plant or working on the line or in the ofal room, but they are jobs. They are also hiring a Toro in Windom and Agco in Jackson, MN My friend is a welder at Agco and work 58 hours a week mandatory with the option on sunday. His pay is around $17 with benefits. bottom line is there are jobs out there for those who want one, and if you are out of work and are on the internet you have time to go pick up cans and recycle them.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

Thank you kannon and billy,
Too bad the farmworkers union wasn't around in the 80's, huh? we could have negotiated at least 1.10 a bushel, but paid .20 a bushel in dues so we could have equal representation and all the other crap the union tries to sell you with. I would have voted for them though if they would have taken away 8 bushels from the 15 year old that picked 15 and given them to me because I was only 12 and picked 5 bushels-because we need to spread the wealth around.L-O-L

Things are getting really bad.  Our local McDonald's are ALWAYS taking applications, and they all have a sign on the doors and drive thru windows saying that "Due to an economic slow down we will not be taking applications at this time"  I also know of someone who got laid off from McDonald's for lack of work.  One local retail chain (Dollar General) that usually hires part-time Christmas help is not hiring either, instead they brought back SOME of the people that they had laid off for lack of work back in September.

First off I'm back online ;D I am the oldest of six we had about 7 acres of truck farm corn , beans , pumpkins and such  I picked so many green beans when I was a teen I didn't eat green beans again till I was 35... I do my job and do it right so I don't need a steward but union is where the best money is .  I have never worked out of the plumbers hall I worked U.A.W. skilled trades and now and am going into operating engineers. I worked on a combined job(union and non union) once years ago  I was setting toilets on a huge retirement condo  thet bitched about me getting 15 toilets a day, so I kicked it up and started doing 21 a day  ;D  I may have slowed down if they had asked. But being a full blooded hillbilly Telling me you are going to do something doesn't work.
My view on unions is: they have taken some stuff to far. But were it not for people like the set in in Detroit or the miners at blair mountian we wouldn't have the wages and working conditions we do. so you have to acknowledge their sacrifices
