Handi Rifle .45-70. Hornady Leverevolution .325 gr. Spike buck at 220 yards. Shattered the backbone. Bang Flop. I thought it was a yearling doe, or I'd have let this one walk.

I took,killed or harvested(depending on who your talkin to) this ole' East Texas Buck with my Daughter's Remmy-a Mohakk in 243 with 100grn cheappie core-loct ammo
Also took this doe and another with her 243.
Trying to teach her that you have to keep getting up and on your stand and stay awake while there. lol

Three with a Browning A-Bolt in .300 Winchester Magnum using 165 grain Speer SP's and one using a Remington 740 in .30-06 and Remington 150 grain Core-Lokt PSP's. All were DRT's.

I killed five (5) DRT deer in South Carolina in late October...3 does and two bucks, one a nice 8-point buck (see photo). All with a 270 caliber Model 70 Winchester "Featherweigh" [sic] no "t" stamped on barrel (see photo tomorrow) and handloaded 150 grain Nosler Partitions over 50.5 grains of IMR 4831, which are very mild and very accurate through my rifle. Then I killed four (4) more DRT deer in Florida in December...2 does and 2 bucks, one a nice buck - my largest ever at 160# (see photo) and again with Win. Model 70 in 270 cal. and handloaded Nosler Partitions.

Interestingly, all of these bucks were killed within 25 yards of the various stands and all of the does were killed from 100 yards to 155 yards away from the stands.

Took two with a T/C Encore .50 cal Muzzleloader with Barnes 250 gr TMZ, and 150 gr. 777, Nikon scope

I took three with a Savage .300 WSM and Burris 3-9, handloaded 165 gr Nosler Accu-bond over stout charge of IMR 4831. Range from 30 to 350 yards. (yes it is too much gun for a 30 yard shot!)

I think I helped him grow a little bit over the years he had been passing through my place. I have planted over 1/2 a ton of Iron and Clay Peas and Soy Beans and spread three to five tons of fertilizer across the same three acres in the last six years (from before he was born). He is definately the nicest Florida buck I have seen while on stand and the nicest off of my place in 14 seasons. He is going on the wall next to his South Carolina cousin of like quality taken in 2005.

Could it be something in me, that I am just now developing into a "Buck Hunter" and seeing them more often? I have been at this for 16 seasons. I kill a LOT of does and hogs but don't see a lot of bucks.

You may have hunted like I usually do. The does come out first, I shoot the does, never see the bucks. After my freezer is full, I shoot bucks. By this time they are gun shy.

That seems to be my problem too mechanic. But I have never found a recipe for antlers. As long as I put meat in the freezer I don't worry about the buck/doe part. As long as it's legal, of course.

Here are my two deer. Both from Michigan. First, doe was shot on Sept 21 early doe season. 1 shot Hornady SST 12 gauge. Dropped in tracks, 70 yard shot. Shot on private land in Southern Shotgun Zone

Second, 9 point buck taken on December 18th at 2:30 pm day before snowstorm. 1 shot from Winchester Apex Muzzleloader .50 shooting 100 grains Jim Shockey powder, 265 grain Hornady Interlock Flat-point, in a Harvester crush rib sabot. 65 yard shot, was trotting/running slowly, hit tight behind left shoulder exited in between last two ribs on opposite side. Deer ran 50 yards into a tag alder swamp and quit. First muzzleloader deer. Was on stand for less than 30 minutes and shot deer, I was basically just sitting down!
Shot in Northern Rifle Zone on State land.

I have shot a few deer with my old .303 British all of whish fell on the spot and for a couple years now I have been using my Tikka M55 in .243 win , 95 grain nos bullets and a weatherby 3-9 scope. I have yet to have a deer run off on me after being hit with either gun. the only time I didn't have a deer drop on the spots was the ones that did a hit and roll when they were shot on the run.

Took a 14 pointer the first day of muzzleloading season with my .45 cal Pac Nor barreled custom savage MLer. 195 Barnes MZ, 60 grains of H-4198, blue Harvestor sabot, and CCI 209m primer. Shoots into 1 inch at 200 yards. Broke this bucks neck at 50 yards as he stepped out of a thicket and tried to figure out what that big lump was on that hill side. I saw him for two seconds and he saw me for one.

The one deer I've taken so far this season was with a Dick's SG ultra varmint camo combo in 308 win. Put a Nikon prostaff 3X9X40 and was shooting rem core lokts 150gr. Hit him at 160 yards and he only ran 20 yards.

I'm still using my "go to gun", (Krieghoff drilling) and took this meat buck a few days ago.

The 200NP's are still the best bullet i've used in 8mm...

Anyway, a couple days ago, when a friend went with me to my blind, i handed my drilling to him and he took this doe for some much needed meat for his freezer,

Remington 1100 12 gauge with 00 buck at 15 yards brought her down and a .357 to the head finished her off. Small doe went about 80 lbs.

I'm 20, grown up around hunting but only got around to getting my license this October, just in time for the November 14th rifle season here in VT.
My GF also decided to buy me a rifle as an early christmas gift, a Remington 7600 w/ synthetic stock, 18.5" barrel in 30-06. Pentax 3-9x. Was all set and legal and eager for my first deer season.

Opening day, headed before sunrise up the wooded mountainside I'd spent the last two years getting to know (hiked around with the gf's dad while he hunted the previous 2 seasons). Was worried about finding my spot in the dark, particularly because I was heading further up than normal and climbing some rocks to reach an area that I'd decided to gamble on. Made it just fine in about an hour with only 1 moment of disorientation.

Sat still till light on a rock, listening to the turkeys flopping around for a while, and then at about 7:10 heard the rustling leaves and looked up to see a buck coming along below me, a bit further down the steep bank I was sitting on. As I'd hoped he was trying to be smart and get around the the plateau below by coming along higher up. He came to about 40 yards from me, at which point I began to raise my gun. With the slight movement he stopped and looked right at me, facing me head on. I knew he'd be gone in a moment and so took the head-on shot at his upper chest/lower neck. He jumped straight up into the air and did a front flip, landed on his side, kicked once more, and then was still. The bullet (180grain 30-06 remington core-lokt) entered his lower neck, and with the angle at which I was shooting down at him traveled down through a lung, punched a hole in the rib cage as it exited the bottom chest. The way he died so quick with just one jump I think it must have broke his neck on the way through. Very little meat wrecked by the shot, which was surprising as from what I've heard from other hunters, 30-06 head on shots like that can be messy.

He was a 150lb eight pointer, above average for a Vermont deer. Couldn't believe I'd gotten my first deer on the first morning out of my first season - and that he was a nice one rather than a little 3 or 4 pointer.

to sum up my overly long post for anyone who got bored with it, I shot my first ever deer on opening day, an eight-point 150lb buck, at about 40yards with a remington 7600 carbine, 180grain 30-06 remington core-lokt, and a pentax 3-9x (set to 3x of course).

6mm Remington, 95 grain Hornady SST bullets, handloaded slow, just starting load. Shot large doe at 30 yards, bullet made 2" holes in ribs on both sides (3rd ribs, low), destroyed lungs, and did not seem to have exited. Which is good, because i hunt a densely populated area. I don't really know, this was my first deer and looking for bullets and holes was the last thing on my mind. No blood trail, but it was not needed, she ran 20 yards and dropped.

Well I normally use my Grandpas' Winchester Mod 94 in 30-30 but of silly me realized the night
before our season opened Nov.20th that I had no more ammo.So after going to store to store and not finding any on the shelf, I in a "crunch" had to use my Handi in .223 . I was nervous about doing so but did it. After reading so many "negative" comments about the round and deer hunting. I came to "my own opinion" a "FACT" for my own eyes to see. "I HONESTLY WAS IMPRESSED"
I won't be afraid to use the round again.....BUT thats me & my own opinion. I was using Winchester
55GR.HP at 150yrds or so, I shot heart lung and the 6 point dropped in his tracks....not one step ...just dropped.
AGAIN....this round I would'nt be afraid to use for deer....and AGAIN this is my own opinion & my own
"factual" findings. I realize others have their own opinion and that is without a doubt their right, just

This one fell to the 444 Marlin in a 444SS. The load was a 270 gr Speer Gold Dot over 46.5 grains of H4198. It dropped him (yeah, it was a him, a 1 1/2 year old buck with 1" nub horns - genetically challenged), like a sack of bricks at 70 yards.

Three deer so far this year. I've carried several guns hunting this year including my 25-06, 7 mag, and 22-250 (mainly for coyotes), but somehow my Ruger .270 has been the only one to take any deer this year.
First was a doe. 185 yards quartering away. Shot in shoulder with a 130gr winchester powerpoint and bangflop.
2nd deer this year was an old 6 pointer( considered a management buck on our lease). Same day as the doe. I had taken a neighbor down to shoot some does, and we saw him when we went to haul off the guts of 2 does we had taken that morning. First saw him along our side of a fence bordering our neighbor. He came out at about 100 yards, then saw us and started running down the fenceline. He finally stopped beside a doe at 268yards. He was facing the fence and I knew the shot needed to drop him or he would jump the fence into the neighboring lease. One shot through the shoulders off the hood of my jeep and he was rolling on the ground. He did a complete backflip . Darndest thing I'd ever seen. Ended up within a few feet of impact point.

3rd deer so far this year was this buck I got yesterday morning from a box blind. Same gun and ammo. I had just gotten a new 7mm08 and took it with me Friday with the intention of sighting it in and hunting with it this weekend, but it was raining so hard I stayed in camp Friday afternoon. .It Finally stopped raining Friday night, and I grabbed my trusty 270 from the truck for Saturday morning's hunt. Got to the blind about a half hour before daylight. I could make out a big bodied deer at daylight, but it took a while to see what he was. After it got light enough to see I've got to admit I got a little shakey. He was facing away from me and looked huge.I waited forever, but he was always facing straight towards me or straight away from me. Never came closer that about 215 yards. He finally started to leave , and I took a quartering away shot at 236 yards. He ran out of my view when I shot, but I found him piled up less than 10 yards from where I shot him. Inside spread was 23 inches.

I guess someone needs to remind our deer that premium bullets and magnum calibers are required and that they should run a little further after shot with puny calibers like the 270. (A little dig at the guys on my lease. 1 guy uses a 7mm08, but the others use 7 mag, 270 weatherby mag, 7mm ultramag, 300 wsm, and a few shoot 300 mags).

I "collected" One big "wet" doe with a Savage 99EG, with Redfield receiver sights in .300 Savage. Best part was it was a "handloaded" 150SBT Sierra bullet that went in the near shoulder and exited the last rib on the far side (quartering to me). I hit it at about 75 yards and it didn't go more than 20 yards. The bullet wrecked the heart and lungs without hitting the stomach; it'll be good 'eatin!
I still have an "Any deer" tag. The bucks have to have at least 4 points on one side to be legal in my area. (I've seen a fair amount of bucks, but none big enough to take.) If I don't get a chance during the regular season, black power season will be here in December.
