Killed a button buck today with a 44mag Blackhawk 7.5" barrel at 10 feet Shoulda waited and just clubbed him with it. And before anyone hollers about the button I'm running outa meat and he's the first deer I've seen in a month! Usually have 4 or 5 deer in the freezer by now. At this rate I may have to buy beef this year.

#1 was a 5 point whitetail, shot with encore .50 ML, 110 grains equiv of 777 and the Precision Bullet Dead Center Sabot, 300 grain .452 projectile, distance was 80 yards and a one shoot drop, massive exit.

#2 was raghorn 4 point with a TC contender in 41 GNR, (44 mag necked to .41) 170 grain sierra HP @ 2000 FPS, not as good a shot, (my fault) 200 yard trail

I got a deer a piece with these two rifles, both in 30-06.  A Remington M760 (buck) and a Winchester made M1917 Enfield custom (doe).  Both with handloaded 165gr Hornady SPs.


This year's M760 volunteer.

Got several deer with each of these during the January 2009 antlerless rifle season. The single shot is a Thompson Center TCR-83 with a barrel in 6MM-06. It shoots 105-grain Berger VLDs at 3,300 fps. The bolt gun is a Weatherby Accumark with a 28-inch Shilen barrel in .338-.378 Weatherby. It shoots 225-grain Nosler Accubonds at 3,330 fps.

I am considering building a small caliber really high velocity deer rifle. I have been thinking 224 TTH but a 6-06 would work also. Could I rechamber a 243 to it? Would I need 26 inches of barrel length or would 24 inches work?

 ;) 300, you could rechamber the 243 provided the action was long enough...I am not sure about Win. or Ruger, but Rem. makes their .243's on short actions. I looked into the 6mm-06 when I was younger and shooting lots of woodchucks..The barrel life at that time was very short according to the guys I visited with, and they did lots of shooting, now it might be different with the new powders...It is one I have not had...Had a .22 Cheetah..Super accurate, but super hard on barrels..While you may not shoot it a bunch at deer, it can take quite a few rounds at times to develop an accurate load..The new bullets or powder hits the market, and more testing and a new barrel is needed.....

 ;) Oh, I forgot, for me in speedy calibers the 26 inch is the only way to go..I have them longer if I can get them...But most folks don't want that, but I would go with a 26..

Son picked up his first buck with his Christmas present, a Stevens 200 .270 using Federal Powershok 150gr.

This 6MM-06 barrel is 26 inches and has a fast twist 91-in-7.5) for the long 105-grain VLD bullets. I also have a 29-inch barrel with a slow twist (1-in-12) for light bullets 70-grain Nosler Balistic Tips which go 3,930 fps. The barrels can be quickly changed on the TCRs. I would not go shorter than 26 inches.

I know this is for the deer you killed, but had to tell this one!  My whole family has devoted three entire seasons to this one buck -- we have only seen him on trail cams! We have hunted every viable time possible to no avail,  but yesterday about 5:30 pm he shows up in front of me at about 75 yards. I had to wait about 15 minutes to get a decent shot, and the only one that presented itself was a neck shot (my favorite anyway--bang-flop!!!)----generally! :-[ :-[ :-[   Anyway I squeezed of on my single shot .223 and left like a scalded dog. No blood or hair to be found anywhere and I searched for about 2 hours! Long story short, I missed a 150 class 8 pointer yesterday :-[ :-[ :-[

rifle season-50 year old win 30-30 '94 my dad gave me brand new when I was 15. I have more exotic rifles but this old gun brings back fond memories.
ML season-Tradition Hawken precussion 50 with conical bullets.
