Mosin Rifle
« on: November 17, 2008, 06:13:59 PM »
The local Gander Mtn here has a long barrel Mosin and a shorter (I think a 91/something). Looks like they come with the cleaning kit, bayonet, cleaning rod, and, I think, as case. They want $99.99 for them. Is this about right? Are they worth the price. From the looks of ammo, you might need to reload for it around here.

The Mosins will be a 91/30 as the Long barreled and an M44 as the shorter with attached bayonets.  Both are cool and have there function.   They want $99??  Thats a fairly good deal if they are in Excellent shape.  The ammo is not hard to get at all as a matter of fact.  I would recommend buying in bulk and don't be afraid of Surplus Corrosive ammo.  Just treat ALL surplu 7.62x54r as corrosive, even the Yugo J30 is corrosive even though it looks a day old :)

If I could walk in and see a gorgeous 91/30 for $99 I'd be ok with the price.  With a C&R you could buy a refurd in Xcellent shape for around $80 and pay shipping....gee around $94 to your door.  I could make a case for buying 2!

Check your importer PW ARMS has a number of Mosins at my local Gander.  PW Arms seems to have soem GREAT imports of whatever variety they do.

If you need ammo email me and I can show you a ton of places to buy it.  Load up on the 70's Yugo, GREAT ammo, its just corrosive so clean accordingly.

That is about right i think. One of our local shops is still selling them around $69. i went in to grab one last week and was too late. The election has created havoc and they sold a case of them in a week. :-\

I think if you are serious about buying one, you should probably go get one. Pick up a tin of surplus ammo while you are there. Along with hearing protection. They are a blast to shoot and watch the reaction of people around you.  It is cheap to shoot, just make sure you clean your rifle.

 Have fun and shoot safe.

Thanks for the info, all.  They looked pretty good, although I'm not sure what to really check out on them. The 91/30 I looked at felt pretty good with the action and looked clean. It was a little hard to tell, since there was quite a bit of cosmoline (or the Ruski equiv). I'm not sure I want one, really, because I shoot left handed and the bolt actions can be a bit of a hassle. Most of my long guns have been pumps, singles, or levers.

Speaking of post election havoc, I was out to the local Sportsmans warehouse yesterday and they had very little handgun ammo left. I got the last box of .44 mag SP. GMtn still has quite a bit of 9, .40, & .38, though. Seems like the .357, .45, and 44mag is very popular around here.   ::)

I just paid $79.99 for an M91/30 at Dunham`s. I have yet to shoot it though. Mine is back-bored about 1-2 inches.

You said the shorter one was a 91/something...if it's a 91/59 then $99 is a great deal.
Actually, $99 is a pretty good price.  Like mentioned, once you add shipping, it's about equivalent to buying online.  With these you get to see them first, also.
The Mosin-Nagant bolt is so simple in it's design and function (which proved beneficial on the Eastern front battles of WWII)  For a lefty, it may be the easiest bolt to work "from over the top"
