Best generic diameters ?
« on: November 18, 2008, 01:54:25 PM »
Load for many 44 Special, 44 Magnum, 45 Colt, 454 Casull, 480 Ruger, 475 Linebaugh, and 500 Linebaugh revolvers.

Don't currently separate ammo by which revolver it will be fired in.  Load to pressure levels that would be safe in any revolver in my possession so chambered.

Don't know when I load today which particular gun two years from now may catch my interest to shoot.  Revolver brands are quite variable but are mostly Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Colt, USFA, Linebaugh customs, Andy Horvath customs...

Obviously, individual chamber and bore dimensions vary.

What would be the best generic bullet diameter to cast and size for the following ?

44 Special
44 Magnum
45 Colt
454 Casull
480 Ruger
475 Linebaugh
500 Linebaugh

UN fortunately casting a "generic" diameter is not always the best. Accuracy could be affected and pressures certainly will. I have the same problem, several guns in the same caliber, and load for each gun separetly. Using different boxes for each gun. I shoot for maximum accuracy though. In YOUR case, I'd cast a thoundth or 2 (.001/.002") over the diameter of the largest bore in that caliber. A safe load checked by actual firing, to be sure there aren't any problems. Also the load should have acceptable accuracy in all the guns it MAY be fired in. This means less than MAX powder charges and perhaps less than maximum accuracy!
