I'm not interested in how you might think that those who lived in that time period felt. I would like to know your feelings. Some may not want to answer given the state of PC we seem to now be going thru but please at least vote, thank you.

I voted yes to the South because I feel its never a lost cause when you stand up for freedom. I also feel it has cemented a certain feeling in the modern day South that we maintain core values concerning the Constitution and our civil liberties. I read somewhere, although I don't know if its true or not, but compaired to the rest of the country more of our youth join the Military. Please don't anyone feel slighted by that as I'm not bragging about it but I do feel its a fact worth noting.

Several have pointed out, from time too time that the Civil War set the South back years.
My point is not based on economics, however.
The South lost Identity and became know too the world as less than rational. It lost its culture and secured the label "redneck". It became known as a racist culture. It found that no one treated the South with any degree of respect.
This is all due to following the leading of self-centered, greedy and war inciting individuals.
Lots of propaganda as was in Germany and Japan.

WL I would beg to differ with you! I would submit to you that the very reasons we are made fun of "name calling, flag degrading, labeling as racist, as well as many other things (backward)" to do nothing more than break our spirit. The reconstruction was to accomplish that but it didn't, northern teachers were to do it but they didn't, the government turning black against white hasn't, and name calling just makes us more proud. I'm damn proud to be Southern and to know that my forefathers fought for our freedoms. I hold those brave, shoeless solders in the highest regard and am proud to be counted as a son of the South.

man for man the south did have the better and the more dedicated soldiers   but that matters little when you do not have the numbers or the economy to support them.    the north won the same way the soviets beat the germans in WW2 human waves of flesh and steel that the south could not compete with. given equal numbers and equipment the south would have won and would have won anyway if they went on the offensive - mistake number 2 by the way - the first was to pick a fight with a bigger enemy    back to topic - who decides if a fight was fair   THE WINNER  and the north won     history is written by the winner    both sides made very big mistakes and the war should not have been fought at all in my opinion - it is an example of the very poor quality of both sides politicians  both then and now.    war is a last resort and both sides did blatantly lie to help the war and cover up mistakes   it is called propaganda for a reason    that all said the war helped the entire contry with standardizing every facet of American life it touched from transport to communication faster and more efficiently than any other method could have.

Fought for whose freedom--white southern people is the answer. The Jews of Atlanta would have been the next on the list if the South had won---which they never could have.
We keep coming back too the same conclusions, and, ignoring them.

  I think you should check on some historical facts. The Southern armies and Navies had officers from many races. Caucasian, Native American, Jewish, Chinese. Granted there were not many but also they were here in a much smaller percentage than caucasians. One of the last Generals to surrender for the South was Native American.  Also the largest slave owner in the South was from New Orleans....and he was Black....Do some research, look it up, Im not gonna tell you who....maybe if you try to find it...you will actually learn more than the northern propaganda. I am a proud native son. I was born and bred in the South. I can trace my lineage in this country back to 1692 when my family moved here from Ireland. They settled in the  Virginia area, then through the following generations moved to Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and finally to Louisiana. Before coming to the Americas they were farmers in Ireland and Scottland. We have traced back to 1540 over there. The Irish were also a looked down upon race. Even though they helped build this country working in every sector from railroads to coal mines and everything in between. On every government paper i have to fill out i check other for race and put in Scotch-Irish. I am proud of that fact. I am also proud that i can trace over 40 of my ancestors from all branches of my family that chose to defend their native states. All in the South.  Also if the South was seen as backwards and "redneck" how come England and France were helping them albeit not openly during the War of Northern Agression?

Yes, I know of this history. I think further investigation will show a very mixed blood line here.
It is still about the money and economics of the South.

sorry if that was nosy but it sounded very much like my family history . probably a lot of us with this kinda family history? my family also from ireland long ago and now from la. by way of al. miss. also came ln on the east coast.found a church in miss started by one of my great greats... weve been in north louisiana now celebrating our 13teenth gen. sorry if it sounds like bragging but u know how family pride can get
