Experience with plain-base large-bore cast rifle bullets ?
« on: November 19, 2008, 03:01:08 AM »

What experience might ya'll share with plain-base large-bore cast rifle bullets ?

585 Nyati
500 A-Square
470 Capstick
etc

Target practice ?
Actual hunting ?

Avoiding gas-checks because I don't know what the future reliability of the proper dimension gas-check supply might be.

Thanks for your advice.

While I don't shoot those large bores I do shoot pb cast bullets up through .459.  I've found that from a pure accuracy stand point very good accuracy can be obtained up through 1500-1600 fps. Above that accuracy deteriorates.  Given those cartridges and their use, "useable accuracy" may be acceptable at a higher velocity. A large bore bullet cast of 20-1 or 16-1 (my choice for hunting bullets in the 1400-1600 fps range) at 1500 fps will kill most any non dangerous game animal rather nicely.  Harder cast bullets with large flat meplats at 1800-2000 fps are proven killers.  Garret cartridges fall into this category and are proven.  A very hard cast RN bullet out of your larger bores at 2000 fps should do nicely on DG. A lot of precise accuracy is not needed at the ranges these animals are normally shot. I'd want an easlily climbable tall tree handy just in case.

Just buy 2 or 3,000 gas checks and don't worry about it. I have a .500 A2 and find it very difficult to fire more than about 15 or 16 full powered rounds in a shooting session. At 15 rounds per session, 3,000 gas checks will last for 200 shooting sessions which is probably 15 years or so ...

Hornady makes gas checks for  .476 and a 50 cal diameter not sure which though.you can get them at midway.I have a 300 grain swc for 45 colt that takes gas checks,i have a few thousand inventoried but i shoot my plan base most of the time. The amount of gas checks i have will last for years as i use it for my high velocity loads.

Try "the gator" Blackmon. Gator gaschecks. Lives here in louisiana. Don't know if he makes those sizes but at worst you can try a google search and ask. A lot of the shooters over at the castboolits@gunloads.com there
do use his gas checks. Every once in awhile they do a group buy sometimes ending up ordering thousands of thousands of gas checks. I know from first hand experience because I have ordered 30cal, 32/8mm, 357, 44,
and 45 rifle checks during these buys. Buying in large numbers gets the price down below what the shooter's supply houses charge. When you get one or two boxes a couple thousand checks sounds like a lot. When I order its normally 5000 checks of one caliber at a time. Beats looki at your stash and saying to yourself "gee gotta get some more" next thing your out. Larry's checks are well made and I have not heard of any complaints from folks who have bought from him. Just might be worth looking into on the castboolit site and see how many you can get and what sizes are available and of course $$$$$. These are not hornaday or lyman gas checks. With all the termoil going on in the gunworld today it just might be a prudent move.Funny thing, Obama isn't sworn in as president yet. And he's given the gunworld probably the best season in years.
I knew a dealer who specialized in black rifles you know the ones every one wants. He can't keep them in his shop. One dealer went to a recent show with 26 black rifles 1st day they were all gone. he had to call the maannager where they make them to get resupplied. If its got A in it or a b in it they are cranking out stuff as fast as possible. Frank
