herter's .312 bullets?
« on: November 19, 2008, 05:04:41 PM »
A friend gave me an opened box of these . 150 grain ,semi pointed Herter's 31 caliber jacketed bullets. The price on the box is $2.78. I do not have any .31 caliber guns,I sold all my old military guns or made sporters /varminters of them long ago! Should I melt them down for the lead content or is there a way to use them in a 30-06 or 30-30 contender??

i'll give you $2.78 for them ;D, they would work great in a brit. 303. i would never melt them down for the lead. but thats just me. you would do good to sell them and take your money and buy some .308 bullets for the caliber you are suggesting ;)

Sounds like a good enough reason to pick up a 32 H&R mag contender, .303 british, etc.   Don't melt them down.  Local sporting goods store may buy them from you for their display case.

Plug "herter's" into ebay and look at what comes up. There are still fans. They sell the old catalogues. Just that price tag is collectable. Many hint that Herter's was selling some other brand "2nds"... oh well. OR with great lube, Imperial, lanolin, etc., you could shove them thru a .308 die (or .309 or ???) and have standard ".30" cals... No big deal. Me? For that many, I would hit the collectors... Someone will probably double your money for you... $2.78 x 2 = $  5 56, MAYBE MORE... ha, ha... enjoy, happy trails.

Are you guys saying Herters bullets are collectable? I bought some at a gun show years ago for very cheap. Some 7mm 150 and 175 grain. Loaded all the 150's for my 7 mag, very accurate. Planned on using them for deer hunting.
