Will AR mags work in Mini?
« on: November 20, 2008, 01:13:44 PM »
I have a Mini 6.8 on it's way and have found hi-cap mags at Midway for the 6.8. They are AR mags. does anyone know if they will work in the Ranch rifle?

Well i can kinda help you a little on this question ... I have some  (think they are ramline made ) Mini/AR mags i bought from a buddies pawn shop .. They have all the traditional shape and straight upper shape of the mag to be placed in a AR mag well .. Yet in the back on the mag there is a little recessed notch to lock into the Mini's mag catch and they placed the appropriate hole in the front of the mag to hang on the front hook , Thus allowing it to work in both weapons ...
Now these were lexan or some other clear plastic ... So they wont drop free from the AR and in the end it was an experiment buying these mags. And the mini is the one they worked best in .. But i now have a template to try this on a AR mag for the Mini .... So your question and theory are sound , It is possible ... The lack of high cap mags for the mini 6.8 is the only reason my 223 mini doesnt have a girlfriend ;)

But in your shoes i would take the tinkerers chance and see if you can fit one of those AR 6.8 mags to your mini ... If you would like measurments and or Pics of the mags i have i would be willing to help you out

     Good luck with it ,

No they have two different loch up systems.
Although Cabalas had a combo mag for the 223 for sale for a while.  there may be some minor modification to the AR mags to make it work.

Had a couple of those Ramline mags back in the '80's----absolute garbage.

They wound up in the trash can at the range---summer of 88--I believe.

About ten years ago, I had a mini-14 and was trying to find some good hi cap magazines for it and was considering some other upgrades as well.  I called Accuracy Rifle Systems regarding some other mods and asked if the mini-14 could be modified to accept AR mags.  I was told that the receiver is too narrow in the mag well area to be modified in this manner.

Of course, that mini was in .223.  I have never seen or handled a mini in 6.8, so I don't know if the dimensions are the same on it or not.

The conclusion that I reached is that the mods required to bring the mini-14 up to a decent level of performance are more expensive than they are worth.  By the time you mod up a mini-14, you could have bought a very nice AR with all the bells and whistles.

I really like the concept of the mini-14.  It's too bad that the design was not executed to its full potential.

 Bench ,

I couldnt agree more ... The mini just never got its just deserves in the accuracy department. Though i'm hearing the new ones are fairing better .

My thoughts on MODing the mini have come to a close as of yesterday , Had a friend with a Ruger target grey M77 in 223 and i traded the mini for said rifle .

But I see your point on the cost of going all out with a mini at accuracy systems it can get expensive ... I just wanted the entry level barrel, increasing barrel diameter and reciever bedding to help with accuracy and groups under sustained fire ..

My love affair with the mini line has always sprung from my love of the M-14 , M1 carbine and the good old Garand ... Its a reliability thing what can i say ;)

Mini 14 wood stock SS 581 target out of the box

First shot was dead center.  Turned the peep sight one turn for the group at 50 yards.  Can't wait to see the groups with a scope!

There is plenty of accurizing you can do to even the earlier models to get them in MOA for not much money.  It's the challenge ... ;)
