Barrel Length

So I was wondering what the advantages/disadvantages/pros/cons/etc of the 24" and 26" barrel for the Encore and Pro Hunter.
Also, I keep seeing these 15 inch barrels.....are those for the Contender, which is a pistol right?
Sorry.....this should be in the other Encore forum.....not classifieds........Can a Moderator move it please?

The pro of a 26 inch barrel over a 24 incher is perhaps a 50 fps increase in velocity.  The cons; I can't think of any.

A 15 inch barrel would be a handgun barrel since, for a rifle barrel to be legal, it has to be at least 16 inches long.  Also, most of the 15 inch barrels are for Encores though you could have one special ordered for a Contender.

The "quick and dirty" rule-of-thumb is 20fps per inch increase in velocity. There's an interesting advantage between 22" and 28", but the otherwise, IMHO, it's in the noise. I like shorter handier barrels because I hunt a lot in the woods, but if I was shooting a lot over 200yds, then I would go for the heavier, more stable, long barrel.

My 338 Federal is 28" on my Encore.............great round, mild recoil and very good accuracy......

I prefer shorter barrels and larger bores that aren't AS effected by the shorter barrels. I carry a 20" 350 Rem Mag Encore. I also have a 16 1/4" 250 Savage. I have no delusions of either being a long range gun but then again I hunt in thick stuff and the portability of those shorter barrels can't be beat.

K so whats with these 16" barrels.  Are they legal to hunt with?  Say in a .243, are they worth taking out and hunting with, or does the short barrel loose to much energy and accuracy at say 200+ yards
