Size is everything.....
« on: November 20, 2008, 07:53:01 PM »
I have a chance to buy a pair of the most incredible deeply engraved vaqueros.  Options are either; two pistols with 4 3/4" barrels or, one 4 3/4" and one 7 1/2" barrel.

Any comments about shooting either combo.   I currently shoot a 5 1/2" and 4 3/4" - not much of a difference between those barrel lengths and I've gotten accustomed to shooting the odd pair, but wondering if the long and short pair would have any drawbacks.  O.K. - I know a pair with the two odd lengths just wouldn't look as cool as a matching pair - but anything beyond that from a practical point?

On the other hand maybe I should just be really thankful to get a 'matched pair' in the shorter barrel length and learn to be more accurate (focus more and shoot more).  Any sage advice out there?

Since you posted the question here I'm gonna assume  you will be shooting SASS matches with them. If so I really see no handicap to the shorter barrels. Ranges in matches are very close and targets mostly are large so longer sight radius just isn't that needed.

I didn't play around in CAS long but used a pair of short barrel guns like that when I did.

I agree with GB. At SASS ranges, I have seen no difference in barrel lengths for accuracy.

You obviously haven't seen the movie "Maverick"!!!  Long barrel on the strong side in a buscadero holster of your choosing and a matching crossdraw for the shorty!  Way Cool!! ;)

Hmm, I do just the opposite, long barrel cross draw and 5 1/2 strong side.  I like the Lee Van Cleef character in the spaghetti westerns, tho I don't think he ever carried a strong side gun.

Buy all three.  A pair and a spare are always better ;)
