Base map question
« on: November 22, 2008, 06:19:28 AM »
What I know about GPS’s you could put in the bottom of a thimble and you still couldn’t see anything. I’m bound and determined to get one though.
I do appreciate all your help though. ;D
Are all base maps created equal?
What is the difference between a base map and the maps you purchase to put in your GPS?

Some of the features shown on the American Rec Base Map v4 on my 76Cx, Freeway exits and services that can be found at that exit.  In addition cities can be found by going to the Find option, and the City Icon.  I just went to the City Icon, and selected Yreka, CA by name.  I then went to the exit Icon and it gave me the Exits by number.  I selected exit 775, a service block opens up and gives me the motels, gas stations, and banks that are serviced by that off ramp.

The basemap shows freeways and State Highways.  It does not show county roads or other streets in my area.  I just check NY City and it appears to show primary streets, but not secondary streets.

When I go to Find and plug in Clinton, MT it shows Clinton on I-90 and exit 120.

From Garmin:

All portable units contain a basemap showing land detail to include major highways, cities, railroads, major waterways and lakes. A basemap for one of three regions of the earth (Americas, Atlantic, or Pacific) is installed at the factory at the time of manufacture and cannot be changed afterward.

The data used in a BaseMap on a Garmin unit is purchased from a company called AND and has some routable attributes. The BaseMap is a very inaccurate, basic map featuring major roads, major cities and political boundaries. The basemap in the unit has been drawn from a map with a scale of 1:1,000,000. You can only expect an accuracy of .25 miles from a map of this scale. It is for this reason that we have created detailed mapping products like City Navigator.
