7x57 HANDI STRIKES AGAIN
« on: November 22, 2008, 04:03:52 PM »
I think I lost my 7x57 to my youngest son today.
Doe #2 fell in her tracks to a 140gr Rem at about 140yds broadside.
Weighed about 65lb.
He's 2 for 2 with the 7x57!!!

Hello LONGTOM, Yep if I was him I'd be laying claim to that rifle. ;D
I'd be wiling to bet most people your son's age have never heard of a 7x57.

Congrats to your son!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Don't feel alone.  I kinda lost my 7 - 08 Remington 700, which is very close to the 7x57 in performance, to my son.  I've been using my Handi .30-30 lately.

LT,

Well....on the up side....they do sell more Handi's in this caliber?  I'm thinkin a new one for you....I doubt if you'll ever get him to part with that one either.

I love it when those young ones have success.

Good job.

Not any more, I think it and the 7x64 Brenneke were only offered once, mine were both made in 2000.

Thanks guys!
I don't think he's done yet.  ::)
He is off from school from Wensday through the weekend and has already asked if he could go with me.
Here I thought that I was going to get to try out all my new Handi barrels this year.  :-\
I either better get on the ball or cut him back---NOT!!!   :D
Now I am afraid to let him try my 7-08 he might want that one too!!
That's ok, I'm carrying my 35 Whelen for now until I get the 7x64 Brenneke sighted in.
My uh HIS 7x57 was also made in 2000 but my Brenneke was made in NL-1997.
He ain't getting that one!!!

Oh well, there's still plenty of season left.

You meen that you can still kill deer with a 106 year old caliber?  I was under the belieff that the deer were tougher now and needed a magnum to put em down. It's great to see a kid get a deer.

 Longtom,

Now that he's shot the 7X57 and likes it you should have him read about W.D.M. Bell. He used that caliber in Africa as a professional ivory hunter. It will give him more pride in what he's shooting.

I'm kinda shocked though, where do you live? 65 lb is small for even a fawn here in MN. No insult intended, just it must be true that deer are bigger up north.

Don't doubt it!  In the county I hunt in south Jawja, the average, mature doe goes right at 65# gutted.  I killed a big (for there) 8 pt. that dressed out at 125.  Why do you think I have to put 4 of 'em in the freezer for my years meat!?   :D

It's a biological evolution thing.  Body mass increases with the colder climates, I'm sure I remember that from my college classes. ???   I think I remember an artical John Wooters wrote about that and Whitetails as well.  (Hope I didn't just make it up.) ;D  DP

Winchester VA.

Spots run up to about 35/40 lb, yearlings will hit around 75, and mature does will average 115 up to about 140.
Last year we did have an older doe that went 192 lb taken late in the season by one of my friends just across the road from me.
Bucks run about 140 for the younger ones and up to about 190 for a good mature one.
The heaviest one I ever took weighed in at 217 on a 5 year old 11pt.
They don't get much of a chance to get that old around these parts.
I would guess that the average age of a buck taken around this area is 2 to 3&1/2 years old.
The last two or three years all we have taken on my farm is younger does, or suit case charlies as we call them!
I own and live on a 240 acre farm that is surrounded by subdivisions and they will shoot anything that has horns, including cows.
Over the years we have had 7 cows shot , two horses and my dog, along with my sister and my self being shot at.
We are only about 80 miles west of Washington DC and get a lot of the city nuts that come out our way to try and kill Bambi!!
Of course tresspassing has always been a problem along with spot lighting.
I use to confront them but with the nuts out there now a days, not any more.

I was watching a deer hunting video that the Benoits made a while ago. They stated that the lifetime average for bucks that one of them has taken is 235 dressed weight. They hunt Vermont, northern New Hampshire, and Maine. Racks are bigger in New Hampshire, and Vermont, but body size is bigger in interior Maine. It's not unusual to hear of bucks that dress 270, or 290 in Maine. I shot an old buck in New Hampshire that had just over a 20" spread, 11 points eastern count, and the antlers were very heavy. I took the rack to PA to show the lifetime deer hunting dad of my BIL, and the antlers were easily twice the diameter of the largest rack that he had. He was amazed, and had never seen anything like that. :D He only dressed 179, but it was at the end of the rut, and he was the old, dominate buck in that area. You will never win any buck pool in New Hampshire with a buck that dresses under 200#.

I've seen some huge "dry" does in Vermont too. They sure can get big! The largest doe I shot in New Hampshire as a teen was 154# dressed. Normally, a yearling buck here is around 125# - 135#. "Skippers" can be as little as 60#  if they were born late, but generally average around 90#.
