I Hope this is OK
« on: November 23, 2008, 10:54:37 AM »
It ain't mine, and I don't know who's it is, but I just love this one.  Safari Golden Age era Mausers really blow my skirt up.  I like double rifles too.

I'd like it better with a skelotonized steel buttplate.

I don't care if it's ok, I'm glad you posted it!  Did you look at all of his other items?  My mouth was watering so much that I had to wipe off the keyboard.  Man, if I only had several thousand $$ laying around right now, he'd be getting a stimulis check for his personal economy!   :D

A .270 is a .277.  A 7mm is a .284.

 :(
There are some many people here getting rid of their rifles. It is such a
hassle to re-apply for our licenses that they just sell them. Rifles that have been
in families for years. Some even just gave it in to be destroyed.
Saw a couple of nice rifles advertised, second hand rifle prices came down allot.
I have an application in for a 300 winmag that I bought for the price of the scope
on it.  ;D
I just hope I gave enough motivation to convince some non-hunting gun hating
government official that I "NEED" a 300 even though I have a 6.5x55!!!  >:(

A .270 is a .277.  A 7mm is a .284.

A .270 is actually a true 7mm, .277" converts to 7.035mm.

.284 converts to 7.21mm, slightly bigger than a true 7mm measurement.   ;)

Ok, the 7X57 is the only .284 caliber rifle I have any interest in owning or shooting.

;D, I have a soft spot for it too, even though the 7mm-08 will do anything that the 7x57 will do, and anymore, it seems to be easier to find 7-08 ammo VS 7x57 ammo.  I really miss my little Ruger #1A in 7x57 everytime I set foot in the woods looking for deer jerky.  :'(

Hmmm well I went and looked and the rpices seem quite good which is more than I can say for the descriptions  ::) the sights that he claims are south african are actually pretty standard on british sporting rifles of that time:-

The one on the right is a BSA commercial sporting rifle built on a Metford carbine action the ones on the left are Battaue Sights on a Swinburns patent sporting Martini that i used to have.

These sights were standard trade pattern sights, two versions being available to suit either MkV1 215 grain or MkV11 174 grain ammunition

If you compare the butt stock of his Long lee by LSA and that on my BSA you'll see they are the same type and probably came from the same supplier and I'll bet his has a lightly engraved steel butt plate like this:-

Horn caps and tips were also standard for these.

The Lightly engraved cheaper Martini with the pannel of swirl engraving is possibly of Belgian manufacture. I say thsi as the engravign is very similar to a 303 bore Martini Muscat I have. Muscat of course is in Oman and these were made for the Omani tribal warriors soem were English made and other belgain the proofs would help. The Belgian ones are metric and the parts will not interchange with British std military weapons. I tried swoppign the breechblocks out fo interest with my Muscat and an Enfield AC11 converted by HRB & Co for 577/450 to 303 in 1898.

As for the Boers not liking British weapons???????????? :o  ::) if you read besters book then this is clearly incorrect.

 ;D ;D This is a 2008 topic - this is where I told you I applied for
a license for a 300 Winmag - well 2 years later and I can give you
an update!! My license has been granted and I can go and fetch the
rifle. WOOOOHAAAA !!! (how is that for a waiting period)
Then I can come and give Swampman a hard time why
300 is better as 30-06 - just kidding!!

well
Until I saw the date , I thought Swampman finally saw the light !!
He is usally quite on and on about remington and now too Marlin , since the two companys are joint owned .
Find he can get on the nerve at times , other wise away from "the Remington sale's pitch" , he is not that bad .
Sweet 6.5
You will find a bit of differance betwwen the 6.5 and now your 300 Wm.
You might take a few shots standing as to start off on the bench, you may just loose your hat, and say to your self " Holy Hanah !!"
I have a winchester model 70 in 300 Wm . It recoils a bit more than the same gun in '06, while the father in Law has a converted P14 in 300 Wm . The P14 being a bit heavier is indeed a pleasure to shoot.
Now what are you going to use this fine rifle for ?

Now what are you going to use this fine rifle for ?

My sister has a farm in Namibia - so there I will just the 300's full power (180gr to 200gr to the max)
seeing that the shooting distance will be long (200 to 300 meters) and the game tuff.
Kudu, zebra and oryx.
Here in South Africa I will down load 220gr to help with meat damage. (100 to 150 meters)

I used my brother in law's 300 CZ to hunt these in June in Namibia.
