sks question.

Keep shooting until deer is dead??  Now I will still say I could care less about the deer and I am serious.  However, I stopped hunting with an SKS as thats EXACTLY the problem.  I took an 8 point buck in 2001 with an SKS and 5 hits to kill the deer.  Meat?  What meat?  Left side shoulder was impacted early on, meat was so spiderwwebed and tore to heck and back NO ONE would eat it.  The blood and goo crap made it "non acceptable" at the grinder as well.

Not trying to flame The ohio slug hunter here but numerous shoits equate to numerous holes in your deer.  Each one removing usable meat from the table.   Spend some "quality time"  with your rifle and start to understand your limitations.  My opinion stands that the SKS is fine to 75-100 yds after that your pushing your luck.

The issue here is your still early on in hunting I think.  Spray and pray will not lead to more deer but less.  Hunt with a Single shot and you will take your shot placement REAL serious.

i went black powder hunting in muzzleloader season i had plenty of opportunities never had a good shot i was confident in. then one young spike showed about 130 yards broadside 1 shot went down lost no meat never hurt shoulders tenderloins or hams. hit the ground.

I never loose any meat on deer or hogs I kill. I don't eat the heart, brains or lungs or any other organs for that matter.   LOL

as stated early in this thread, you said you were using remington cartridges, well they use a 308 bullet and will not pattern closer than 6 inches in my rossi. i have put togethor a range report on this caliber using every kind of commercial cartridge i have got my hands on and might carry over well for your sks. you can find it in the rossi forum. hope this helps you out.

i put this rifle on a bench with the remington ammo and got good groups the problem i had after i thought back was buck fever i guess. wasnt the gun.

I agree with the advise to go to the 154 gr. rd.  It is a much better killer than the 123gr stuff.  But it is really slow, so keep shots under 100 yd. or so I would suggest.
