.22 LR Handi Doing the Job

Been camping/traveling the last two months. Only weapon my .22 Sportster. It has served me very well. Dropped squirrel, rabbit, grouse, groundhog, etc. Topped off with a "cheap" Konus mil-dot scope it has been deadly, head shot, accurate out to 75 yards.
Couldn't be more pleased. It shoots both Federal 36 grain and sub-sonic 60 grain ammo (Aquila) quite well, and consistent enough that I can simply adjust my verticle hold based on which load I am shooting.

great report, and it looks as if your Sportster is doing well for you. Too many times when people think "survival" rifle they think of big bores as in powerful rifles. It looks to me as if your have a real "survival" rifle in your .22 LR Sportster. With the size and cost of .22 LR ammo you can carry a lot with you....<><....:)

   Many years ago Skeeter Skelton wrote an article where he had gone to visit his old friend Dobe Grant on Dobe's ranch for the weekend. they got down to one of those if you could only pick one type discussions. They ran through Dobe's whole arsenal mentally listing all the strengths and weaknesses of everything there. As I recall the last thing to come up was the .22 pump that Dobe kept by the back door. That was the one he chose.
   I'd be hard pressed to disagree.

Gotta agree! My NEF .22 is a Versa-Pack barrel which fits perfectly on the same Handi frame as my ought-six and .357 Max barrels. The only squirrel I have taken this year was with a single shot from the Versa, loaded with a CCI CB Long. Squirrel bake with potatoes and onions, for one. If I had more time to hunt, the little NEF would have allowed me to lay out a squirrel feast.

Sounds like the Sportster is serving you well.  Minimize the meat damage and you can take what you need with it.  Also sounds like a good choice of ammo.
