Whats the best coyote bait?? Have you ever tried a smoke pot with pork fat?? I was thinking about it everytime i fry bacon at my camp i get company at night?? any other suggestions I can't walk far and i have to sit and was thinking of using some kind of bait closeby my camp?                  BigBill :D

Venison !!! Left over scraps from butchering are the best. They always find em quick. Problem is once they find em they clean em up fast.

here on the farm we have a reciepe its not too complecated its a dead calf or deer equals dead coyotes!!  They will find anything and clean it up if you wound a deer here you better find it or it will be half gone by morning, so we try to make sure its a quick clean kill on the deer for all involved not fun looking all night or late into the nite and finding half the deer, anyhow use anything thats LEGAL some states may have baiting laws look into that first, and have some fun. :D   JIM

Coyote Bait? Oh yeah, I got coyote bait. I killed two does a few days ago. I had parked my aluminum duck boat near my deer gambrel. After skinning and butchering I pitched the hides, heads, legs and meat scraps over in the front of the boat to keep the neighborhood dogs from scattering them over the yard.Well I had to work a 48 hr shift the next day and was away from the house for two days. My brother killed two does and brought 'em by the house to hang and clean. He saw the deer parts laying in the boat and figured I was saving them for coyote bait. I'd been talking about trying to kill some 'yotes. Well when he finished cleaning his deer he pitched everything over onto the pile in the boat. The next day(I'm still at work) He and another hunting partner killed three more does.(legal here in Tennessee during the antlerless season) Well he told John what he thought I was planning on doing with them. So they pitched everything over in the boat. I came home from work and pulled up the drive to a boat full of deer parts. The pile's so high I think a show dog would have trouble jumping over it. Now what do I do with them. Do I just take 'em out and dump 'em in a likely spot and call or what? I'm gonna look silly hauling a duck boat through the pasture. Never had this problem before. Anyone with baiting experience out there I'm open for suggestions..

A hog (feral or domestic) works pretty well.  Stake it down so the coyotes can't drag it off and shoot coyotes off of it for a long time.  The coyotes will come to the carcass, but they  won't eat much of it so it lasts a long time.

Specially if you wait out the weather a bit and it all freezes.

Last winter, an EP officer I know calls me one night and says he has a deer carcass (little four point) for me if I'd like it for bait.  I said sure and moved it to an out of the way location we hunt.  I did not stake it down and nievely thought 'maybe the yotes will leave the skull/rack where I can find them when they're done.'  I went back a few days later and they had begun to consume the deer from the back end of course, and it was like you dipped the deer in acid; front half was almost untouched and what bones were left on the back half were cleaned off.  I didn't check the area for another several weeks, thinking I'd see some bones, hopefully the skull/rack.  There wasn't one bone visible in the area.  Only two matted down areas of fur on the bare ground.  Like it was never there.

I make baitcicles.  I use a 5 gallon plastic bucket and put meat scraps, bones or whatever in it and add water.  Freeze it solid and put it out in a likely place.  They don't pack it off very quick and it works good.  I usually put out some bones or scraps to get them started then add the the baitcicle.

Trapping scraps in a rubber made tote,  makes a nice meatsicle that they can't carry off.   I have used these several times over the years and aside from shooting predators off the meatsicle I have also had very good luck predator calling 1/2 mile downwind of the bait.  A lot of times when coyotes take over teh bait the fox and bobcat would hang out waiting for a safe minute to go in and sneak some,  a lot of the time they would come in to a call.  I also called in several coyotes off bait sites.  They must have been laying up close to the bait and reponded to a nice fresh diner.

Love the frozen bucket/bones idea!- I just put out my bones (-5 degrees F) behind the house 152 yds lazered last Sun and had to wait till turkey day for one. Small bugger but had a good time watchin him chase Ravens for about 15 minutes before I couldn't take it anymore. Got out my old 77 Swift w/12 pwr Redfield. Used max H414 load w/old 50 gr Win PSP RP/RP 9 1/2. Huge wop when it hit, as usual! Now there are 2 Eagle on the Coyote, they love them, I've seen as many as 7 at a time on one. -Muddy

Gut piles work well. My friend who runs hog hunts in east Texas uses them daily. Snipes them with a .22 Hornet.

I use what I call a "meatsickle. Scraps from the butcher, cheap dog food and left over food scraps in a large plastic tub. Pour in some hot water. Wait for it to freeze and walla, "meatsickle". Here are some pics of them.
