I finally joined the NRA!
« on: November 24, 2008, 10:47:21 AM »
I did my part today.
Had always meant to join just never got around to it.
One more name on the roll will probably do more good than the 35 bucks but hey it's a start.
We need all the help we can get for the next two years.
Hopefully we will have a change in congress then.

Any other holdouts want to join me?

Welcome aboard!

If you get a chance to, go to the annual convention. It's a great time, lots of guns and accessories to play with, the formal dinner always has a movingly patriotic aura to it.

Also they usually have show only deals on upgrading your membership. I upped to a life membership at the show in Milwaukee, they gave me a price break and I got a pretty cool leather jacket for free.

I would like to upgrade again when my finances allow it.

grimjim-

what was the break on the lifemembership? I have been thinking about doing it but the price is a little steep.

My memory is really bad but if I remember correctly the usual price was $750 and I got in for $550. Or it was $1000 and I got in for $750. I can't remember which but it was a substantial savings.

I'm sure my wife will remember the axact amount. ::)
I'll have to ask her when she gets home.

Gun Owners of America does more to protect our 2nd Amendment rights! I was a NRA member for many years, and stopped my EPL payments, and my membership, and joined the GOA. The main reason was the fact that the NRA supported H.R. 2640, better known as the 'Veteran's Disarmament Act'. I spent 20 years in the military, and I can't support them anymore. Even Ted Nugent was against the NRA on this. His quote-

"Be a real American Warrior for gun rights & freedom. Join GOA & sign up as many members as you can."
Ted Nugent
Rock star

My favorite quote about GOA-

"The only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington."
-Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

The NRA compromises and makes back room deals with gun grabbers.
The GOA has about 300,000 members, and, even though that is small compared to the NRA's 4 million or so, they are big enough to have a great deal of clout. Many Senators and Congressmen have been strongly influenced by them.
Spend some time on their site, and it is obvious that they are a no compromise force in Washington.

i  do  agree  with  you  but

giving  one group  more gun  rights  than  others [NO MATTER  HOW DESERVING]
is  a devisive technique
and  they  succeeded  and getting  you to leave  the  NRA
making any  distinction  to  take  away  some ones  rights  and justifying  it because  you  exempted  the  most  deserving  is still  wrong
i  am sure  that was  the  NRA  intention   so  people  like  me [non-vet.....not  x-law enforcement]  won't resent people  like  you
ALSO  I  AM SURE  THEY  DID  IT TO KEEP  YOU IN THE FIGHT WITH  US  and  not become apathetic cause  it don't effect  you

i  am  sure the GOA  is  a good bunch  i  may join  then  too
i am  sorry  the NRA  rubbed  you the wrong  way
and  i  am  not   real  familiar  with  that  bill  you  mentioned
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

I could be as member of GOA but as long as the little sniveling back biter Larry Pratt is running things there I'll just stay away and continue to support the NRA.  It was mind boggling the misinformation Pratt flooded the internet with on H.R. 2640 when all people had to do was go read the actual bill itself instead of swallowing the garbage Pratt was putting out.  It was the VA itself that allowed their psychiatrist’s to place a vets name on the no gun ownership list.  H.R. 2640 shut that practice down by requiring that only a lawful court could adjudicate such a matter, not some 25 year old anti gun internet certified psychiatrist working for the VA.  "Rep. Daniel Lungren (R-Calif.) denounced the VA’s "overreach" and pointed out that H.R. 2640 would allow wrongly listed veterans to seek restoration of their rights. [Note: If you are a veteran and have been denied a gun purchase due to the VA’s actions, please call NRA-ILA’s Legislative Counsel at (703) 267-1160."   One can read here the NRA's clearing of the record http://www.nraila.org/Issues/Articles/Read.aspx?id=246&issue=018 and then when finished there take the time to look up the actual bill and read it.  If a person is honest with themselves, they will quickly realize that Larry Pratts  only goal is to make himself king of the gun lobbies.  I'm sure GOA has some fine people working for them and their platform is to be commended but I just have this thing about a person like Pratt who will go to such lengths to discredit another organization who has the same interests we all desire that it just turns me off.

What do you expect the NRA to say, after the fact, to try to save face? Why don't you spend some time on other sites, reading what has really happened. Veterans that try to get off the list are blocked, due to Schumer cutting off funds. Here are examples-

Sorry Line475 but all you're doing is repeating internet gossip and GOA published hit pieces.  I really do hate to use the term GOA as it really is more the work of one man.  If you can't look at the NRA report with a open mind then why should you expect anyone to view you two GOA links with a open mind?

Schumer has absolutely nothing to do with the NRA's action line that I posted.  Contact that number and they will help and guide any vet through the legal process.  All it takes is the proper paper work to be filed and a court of law will become involved by a sitting judge.  GOA knows that but conveniently leave that information out of their write ups.  Schumer got involved after that collage kid killed all those  students at Virginia Tech and it was discovered he had been diagnosed as mentally unbalanced but his doctor was not legally bound to report this to NICS.  That's what the original bill went after, to require that information to be made available for a NICS check and the NRA thought it a good idea as do I.  Had that information be available the shooter would not have been able to buy the guns he used.  The NRA went to the Senate and told them they would publicly support the bill if provisions were made for relief of the vets on the no buy list whom the NRA felt were unjustly placed.  A deal was struck and the public and gun owners were the winners.  All the stuff your reading and listing was either before the deal or simply Larry Pratt style of back stabbing.

Did you bother to go read the actual bill?  If you're having a hard time finding it I'll post a link for you.  After you read it I'll be more than happy to discuss any section of the bill that you don't understand or feel is hurting vets.  Here...... I'll get you started.  http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-2640    If a person is a criminal, they will hate this bill.  If they are a law abiding citizen then they have nothing to fear.

Want some additional reading from a pro gun group that couldn't disagree with you more?  Here is a article written by an attorney for "Pro-Gun New Hampshire"  that studied the bill and it's actual effects.  http://pgnh.org/enough_nra_bashing  .

Yes, it is bs............. you're regurgitating stuff that was written in early to mid 2007 when the bill was first proposed.  The final bill as supported by the NRA wasn't completed and passed by the senate until December 2007 and signed into law by President Bush in January 2008.  They are not even close to being the same bill.   For crying out loud.....stop posting the propaganda from GOA links and go read the final bill and get your head out of the sand.  Even your third link tries to tie some guy in Pennsylvania as losing his rights and the bill hadn't even been signed into law yet.  Give me a break.  Apparently you won't even take the time to read the actual bill as passed because if you did you wouldn't be so quick to post the links you do.  If you won't even do that then there is no further need to discuss anything with you.  I'm really starting to get the picture now why this garbage persists even today.

Gohon, you are like talking to a Lib!  Get YOUR head out of the sand. How much does the NRA pay you? By the way, I have read it several times. Don't worry, I am done posting. You aren't worth the effort.

Well that wasn't really an unexpected reply.  When one can't debate facts with facts the usual response is to throw mud and to see what sticks and say the effort isn't worth it.  Actually I wasn't trying to debate you or argue with you but to simply give you the truth so you would be better informed.  Sorry that wasn't acceptable.   Just for your information I'm neither a Democrat or a Republican.  I'm a conservative concerned with our gun rights as well as the rights of the rest of our constitution.  Though I lean heavily to the right I have no qualms about accepting those from the left when it concerns our constitutional rights.  Few as they are, those pro gun  people on the left are a valuable asset to our struggle to keep the gun grabbers at bay.  I'm not talking about the McCarthy's and Schumers.  Their agenda was media attention.  They got their media attention and we gun owners got our rights.  Who do you think really won.

For those interested here is a recent announcement........ "The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), through the National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has announced the final amended version of its changes to rules on carrying of firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges.  DOI's move will restore the rights of law-abiding gun owners who wish to transport and carry firearms for lawful purposes on most DOI lands, and will make federal law consistent with the state law in which these public lands are located."  Chalk up another win for the gun owner.

Gohon I hope we can keep gaining a few more rights and stop more of the gun grabbing elected officials.
