.38 and .357 Mag Super Vel
« on: August 13, 2003, 05:30:52 PM »
I pick up a bunch of .38 and .357 Mag Super Vel cases and 3 boxes of 125 grain bullets at a garage sale.  Any body know anything about these?

.38 and .357 Mag Super Vel

They are the grandfather of the high speed, light wieght bullets for law enforcement in the late 1960's.  During that period of time the .38 Special was the standard L.E. handgun round, followed by the .357 Mag.

Most of the .38 Special 158/200 grain loads, and the .357 loads would zing through the target without dumping their energy in the target.  Meaning the target required a little more shooting.  The SuperVel bullets and ammo were designed to over come these problems and provide additional stopping power.

Dean Grennell who was the Executive Director of the American Reloaders Association wrote a great deal about the SuperVel bullets and loaded ammunition.  I worked with one of his boys and recieved some SuperVel bullets from him.  I still have some of the orginal bullets and box.

The idea caught on because the government had a round loaded later called the .38 Special +P+ Treasury round.  This was a 110 grain hollow point round.  I suspect it was the round used by the first Sky Marshall program.

Super Vel ammunition was produced at the Shelbyville, Indiana facility by the owner, Lee Jurras.

Yes, it was the pioneer of today's light-bullet, hollowpoint, high velocity revolver and pistol ammunition.

Other than nostalgia value, I'm not aware of any "collectibility" of this ammunition.

My Dad was a lawman 'back in the day'. I bought him some SuperVel .38 Spec. 90 gr. (I think it was 90 gr.). He stuffed 'em in his S&W model 37.  Was sure proud of 'em. I still have one.
We shot some Super Vel 9mm para. in an old Nazi-marked Astra 600, we were stupid kids and didn't know better. Worked fine, though.
