.38-40 deer

I took this deer yesterday afternoon on some land just down the road from my house.  He was bedded in a thicket upwind of me and I heard him when he got up and bolted.  He ran by me at about warp 3 and I got one shot, leading him a good bit.  I put a 200 grain LFN from my Linebaugh Custom .38-40 through his lungs and recovered him about 125 yards further down his path.

Nice buck and good shooting.   Hand load?  I like the old  Gordon Boser design in Lymans #401452 in my Chet Paulsen customized Colt New Service.  Never made a kill with mine though it's a routine clover-leafer on paper.  Congratulations on your success.

Thanks guys.

The revolver is a Linebaugh Cutom built on a Bisley platform.  The barrel is 5.5" and the grip panels are ivory micarta made by Dustin,  John built the revolver.  Bullets are the 200 grain LFN from Montana Bullet Works and the powder charge is 14.0 grains of HS-6.  Chronographed velocity is 1,300 fps.

  Good job, MS. .38-40 is a good one. Good eatin' too. Just made some backstraps and shoulder steaks for myself and my boy obtained with a .357 Magnum. Passed on a .38-40 years ago and wished I hadn't. Good eating and good shooting!!!!

The 38 WCF is my favorite revolver cartridge, glad to hear about your success with it. Sounds like you have a REALLY nice revolver.

Dan Deluca aka "warrior1" has passed away.  Dan was a frequent poster here and on several other sites.  He passed away on 12/29/08 from a massive heart attack. RIP Dan.

Very nice job, congratulations. I'll bet you were the only hunter in the woods with that caliber of handgun? I like the old obsolete(not popular any more) calibers. Guess I'm nostalgic?

This isn't granddad's .38-40.  My load is lumbering along at 1,300 fps.  Linebaugh's gotten the same brand of bullet up over 1,600 and could go more, but bullets jumping crimp are the limiting factor. 

I like this particular load because it the noise and recoil are not objectionable and it knocks a good size plug out of a whitetail.
