Practice Bullets
« on: November 28, 2008, 10:50:35 AM »
When I got my loading stuff from my neighbor he also threw  in
some 357 primed and loaded with little rubber practice bullets.
Great fun sitting in the garage on cold rainy days and plinking.
I have been trying to locate some since I only have a couple dozen
and would like to maybe find some other calibers.
My searches have come up empty, anyone know of a source?

All you need is a bullet mold and a HOT GLUE gun , you can make your own in any cal or shape you want , a little tick that I learned over at CastBullets Forum's .

Don't know of anyone still making them factory .

Thanks Stimply for the Tick ;)
Are they reusable?
I do not have any molds tho.

Matt I looked on Midway, Midsouth and Natchez
and did not find them.
Maybe I am calling them by the wrong name.

The 38s are the only ones I'v used.  Hit the link.  If the page doesn't open, go the the home page and enter rubber bullets in the search bar and hit go.

Thanks guys
just added 38 and 45 to my wish list.
Not sure why my search came up empty ???
I also have some of the Speers but they are a little to hard.
They almost went threw the rubberized, carpet car floor mat I have for backing.

Those plastic Speer bullets will go thru a newspaper at 25 feet! I used them in my basement and had a folded paper in the bottom of the laundry basket against the far wall. The red plastic "cases" are charged with a mag primer in .44 caliber. I expected the bullets to be caught in the paper, they were NOT! If I remeber correctly, they were going over 450 FPS from the muzzle of my Ruger SBH. I found out later that they WILL kill a cat at 15 to 20 feet! These are NOT toys, so be certain where you are shooting them is safe! After a box(50) rounds are fired a cleaning is neccessary. A bullet will get stuck in the bore from all the residue and plastic.

those plastic ones will go thru drywall out of my .357 but they are pretty accurate across the room. Just remember they are not a toy. 8)

I used the plastic speers in 38 out of my DW357 to take the collared doves in Florida; they were replacing the native doves.  I could kill a dove out to to 30' and even took out a squirrel with a head shot at around 25'.  They definitely aren't toys and can be reused many times.  The plastic shells wear out much faster than the plastic bullets.  I usually get 2 boxes of shells for each box of bullets.  The bullets will also work in 38 cases; if you bore out the primer hole to reduce restriction, use the plastic shell primer port as a guide.

In the Coast Guard about 25 years ago we played "shoot/don't shoot" movies on a reel to reel projector.  The image was focused on a big sheet of wrapping paper.  IWhen you shot the villan (or the good guy), the projector operator would stop the movie and play it backward.  You could see if you hit the bad guy.  We used plastic .45 cal bullets and primers, but no powder.  Range was about 10 feet.

My father shot these alot as a kid growing up I shot my share as well. They where the CCI RED JET wax bullets. Later on we discovered the speer plastic bullets and red cases for the 38. They worked well too, but where more expensive.

I still have a couple boxes of those red jets, I haven't shot them in years.

I just remembered something else, IIRC pop used to make his own bullets of a mixture of beeswax and bullet lube in a cookie sheet. Heat and mix and allow to cool about 1/2" thick. Just prime the case and "cookie cut" out the bullet from the solidified wax mixture. Great for basement shooting.

Done that myself , works reat but the bullets are a one shot deal unless you come up witha way to recoop the wax and melt it again . maybe a metal plate for them to stick to or hit and fll strait down into a box .

Mike

What do you shoot ? ( cal. )  I could mold you up some of the hot glue ones if I have a mold in your cal's .

Stimpy, I'd like to practice with my Contender.
7-30 Waters is my hunting barrel
but my 218 Bee or 223 would be fun.
I also have a 30-30 and 45 Colt

All you need is a bullet mold and a HOT GLUE gun

STIMPY!!   :o  You mean I can get, say a 429421 mould and fill the cavities with Hot Glue and actually CAST practice bullets!?   :o :o  how do they work? are they reuseable?  You may have just given me a reason to get into casting more then BP round balls!  :-*

My wife-mate wants me to set up a practice range in the basement and although I've got 38 and 45 cal (plastic/rubber) practice bullets, this opens up a whole new world!   ;D

Yep , that's about it , I've made some in .454 , .224 and .410 so far . once in a while one will stick to the mold but a good wipe down with some rubbing alc & a Q-tip for the corners does the trick .

Some guys like to use a silly - cone spray  as a mold release buy I've never found a need to do that yet , some of mine are on their 5Th loading and still look good , load them just like you would for a wax bullet ( primer only ) and shoot away .

Disclaimer -- These are not toys -- they can and will do bodily harm or even death if misused !!!

Now that I have a new crony I'll give some a run to see just how fast they actually go .

Stimpy, Do you use the sprue plate or just fill the mold and smooth it down? I have the plastic bullets but this sounds more user friendly.

BB

Most of the time with the larger bullets I part fill with the sprue plate swung to the side and then move it into place to fill the last 1/4" or so with it as it should be , hope that makes sense .

I'll try to get some step by step pics up tommorrow to give you all an idea as to how well it works .
