« on: November 28, 2008, 01:21:31 PM »
I've used a ruger 10/22 for years and I thought about trying out the 597 .22lr. Are these reliable/accurate rifles? Thanks Ya'll.

At first Remington had problems with them.  They went through three generations of magazines.  Also the rods the bolt slides on should not be too tight.  I had one.  I bought it new.  It had a third generation magazine. I put a Volquartsen hammer in (about $30).  Trigger pull was cut in half.  The gun shot fine.  I had less trouble with it, then I had with two Ruger 10/22's I traded off.  I traded the 597 on a Winchester 9422.  I've gotten out of semi's and into levers.  Levers are less aggrevation.

I've always had a love /hate relationship with Remington.  I love their guns but I hate their quality control.
These rifles still have many problems. Just do a search.  When the oldest Remington repair center in the Southeast won't work on them or take them in trade, something is wrong with them.   Most will jam right out of the box with any ammo you try. I had one that I nor two repair centers could fix.  It's the ejector and the poor machine work that Remington uses. The mags were some of the trouble but it's really the way Remington machines the bolt.  Many blame it on the guide rods but it's the ejector. The bolt is cold cast and then roughly machined aluminum.   It was the biggest pile of junk I ever bought from Remington and to be honest, it left a bad taste in my mouth for this company.  I doubt I'll ever buy another Remington product except maybe a 700 or another 870. They don't have the best track record when it comes to trying to market a gun they know there are probblems with..  The Viper, 710, 742 ring a bell?  Often they change the stock and wrap the same old turd in a different shell, then give it a new name....The 770,7400... You ever notice that when someone that has  a 597 that shoots, often they have replaced most of the parts it came with.  I have a cheapo Mossberg Plinkster that shoots anything and has never hung up on me.  I never clean it much either...There are many other rifles out there that are much better for the same money. Mossberg, Marlin(Remington Now but the design is still Marlin)
