GP100 Question

I bought a gp 100 from a co-worker and ordered firesights for it .If I have to remove the front sight will it tap out of the dovetail like most do? The reason I wonder I was cleaning it today and looking at the muzzle and noticed what appears to be a steel dowel or pin.It is recessed and runs toward the back of the gun and is under the front sight but above the barrel.If that holds the sight from moving l or r I don't know how you would pull it. Anybody have any experience with these?

That that "dowel or pin" is the plunger that holds the front sight in.
Press in on the spring loaded plunger and lift the front sight off, starting at the rear.
The sight may, or may not, come right off easily. It might require a little leverage under the rear portion of the sight.
I would say "refer to the GP100 manual" but it doesn't give instructions for removing the front sight that I can find.
If you need more info let me know and I'll post pictures.

tcrace,thanks alot.That pretty much explains it ,I never gave it a thought that it might spring.I hadn't pushed around on it or anything.I just noticed it and figured it wouldn't drive off like some of my other guns without a little trick.I didn't want to ruin anything so figured I better find out.I guess we do get smarter as we get older.

The GP100 and Redhawks have a delightfully simple sight removal. All kinds of sights are available for it. Have fun.

Tried out the Ruger orange colored sight today. It only lasted 'till the 14th round.
Of course I forgot to bring the original sight or another one of the colored ones with me. 
Maybe I'll just try the rest to see how long they last.

I hope they come in the next day or 2.I ordered williams firesights so I will have to see if the whole sight has to be changed or what.I have them on a slug gun and like them so we'll see. Thanks for the help.

It looks like the rear sight will just be a "blade" replacement on the Williams Firesight.
I'd like to hear how they work out for you and if the Williams front sight is taller than the Ruger factory front.
My factory front seems too short to me, I've adjusted the rear almost to the bottom of its travel just to get close to hitting the target at ~25 yards.

I think it is a little taller.I will have to get the old one out and look.The sights look good and should work great.I need to do some more shooting with it. The only issues you have are not losing the spring in the rear sight and modifying it a little to move back and forth.This is all mentioned in the package.I think they will be fine,I have a set from the same company on my slug gun.
