Favorite powder and bullet for .223?
« on: November 28, 2008, 06:20:16 PM »
Day after tomorrow(11-30-08) I'm going to go pick up my H&R U.V.F. in .223. I was wondering what your favorite combos were. I would like it not to be temp. sensitive. Will be for general shooting and PD's.

Thank you

The only non temp sensitive powder I know of is the Hodgdon Extreme powders. Of those you may want to try Varget for heavier bullets and Benchmark for the lighter bullets. You may find that H4895 or H322 will work best too. All mentioned are suitable for the 223, just have to find which one shoots best for you. Good Luck and Good Shooting

My accuracy load is H322 powder and CCI match primer and a 53gr HP bullet. But being that's a match bullet, I'm not so sure about its expansion...

For my area which is reasonably populated I use lots of Hornady SPSX bullets. They are not the very most accurate but plenty enough for woodchucks at 250 yards. And they are cheep.
As for powder I use surplus powder WC-844

Ive used BLC-2 with very good results. But lately I've been on a blue-dot kick.
The bullets I use are the Midsouth house brand both the 50 and now the 34gr.

How do those light bullets shoot? I have some 30gr bullets from Calhoun but have not yet tried them.  What twist are you shooting them through?

H322 with 52 grain bullets and under, and Reloader 15 for bullets over 52 grains,  my best loads have been 24 grains h322 and the 52 grain a-max and 24.5 grains h322 and the 50 grain v-max.

I forgot to mention bullets. I have had good luck with Hornady 50 grain V-Max, but a lot of folks like the 55 grain V-Max. You really have to try different combination to find what works best for you. the 223 is so versatile, there are several powders and bullets that will work and work well for you. As far as primers go, I like the CCI BR4 and Remington 7 1/2. I shoot a lot more Remington 7 1/2 simply be cause they are much cheaper than the CCI and I get similar results.

Ive got a older 1-12" twist bull barrel. I only got to shoot the 34gr's a few times before deer season started. But with 12grs of blue dot it was around a 3/4" group at right at 3000fps. They are so small you cant play with the col.
