Rustoleum for rusty Remington 870 ?
« on: November 30, 2008, 06:39:39 AM »
I have several Model 870 shotguns and extra barrels. They are all well maintained and have no rust problems, with the exception of one 'rusty' extra barrel that was given to me.  I have read in these forums of others with guns that rusted. I cleaned up the rusty barrel with WD40 and Remington Nitro CLP ( this is no longer produced). I have never felt confident that I totally cleaned every space beneath the vent rib.
My question is this. Would I save myself a lot of cleaning time if I painted the exterior metal with Rustoleum? I read in a previous forum where this was briefly mentioned? It would be a lot cheaper than Dura-coat. If so, should this be done with the receiver, barrel and magazine tube, inside and out?
Of course I would never paint the inside of a barrel with anything. But the idea that I could prevent exterior rust problems with Rustoleum does have appeal. I worry that it may not stand up to the heat after multiple shots, or over time. How does one clean up a Rustoleum painted gun -- with a gun oil?
This topic concerns ONLY the Express type finishes. I would never do this to a blued finish. What is your opinion ?

I'd use Cerami-Kote from Wheeler Engineering (midway usa) or one of the spray on finishes from Brownells like Aluma Hyde I or II, or the others that they offer.  Some need to be baked in an oven, some don't.

The main reason that I'd use these finishes instead of any regular spray paint is because they are for the most part impervious to the various gun solvents and oil, and regular spray paint isn't.  They are also much more abrasion resistant and tougher, and they will cover the metal and any scratches or other imperfections better than Rustoleum or Krylon will.

Thank you kyelkhunter3006 !
I shall look into these. I am not in a rush to do this right now. I want to explore all options first.

I like and use Rustoleum paint. An old Model 7 I did with it over 20 years ago has at least 95% coverage still today and has only worn where it touched the gun racks in my Bronco and a bit on the bolt knob and trigger guard area from contact with hands.

I let it bake on one summer day in the rack of my Bronco parked in the sun with windows up. Do something similar and you'll have no more problems with it rusting ever.

Be sure to thoroughly degrease it first. I used acetone.
