PD 2009 Shoot??
« on: November 30, 2008, 03:31:37 PM »
So, I'm reading Trotterlg's post about a PD Shoot door prize barrel...

Am I to understand that there will be a PD shoot in '09???

If so, does anyone know location yet??

If it's someplace like South Dakota, I doubt if I'd be able to get away
for that length of drive in my old truck...

So I have another question... (I know, full of them tonite... or full of
something!! LOL!

Has anyone thought of more of a "regional" prairie dog shoot for other
guys like me who can't travel so far???  Just a thought...

We've got a bunch of PD's in north central AZ.... maybe a southwest shoot?

Thanks!!
Mike

Best way to make a shoot work is grab the bull by the horns and run with it and see what ya get for intrest. Just remember initial intrest is 100% and by the time ya get them in the trucks it's about 3.5%. Throw your idea out and see what sticks. Kurt

The Annual GBO Prairie Dog shoots are held in late May/early June each year. They are held out in the far end of the OK panhandle with Hooker, OK being the central gathering point. The specific dates are never set until a month to 45 days prior to the event. Participation is generally limited to a maximum of 25 and seldom do that many actually show up even tho at times 50 or more say they will be there.

Thats what I did the first yr I went... made sure I had things in order to leave at the last minute. I would imagine if the fuel prices stay down this yr it will fill pretty fast again. Kurt

Mike,

I'm half way between AZ and OK, and always up for a PD shoot.  What have you got in mind?

Well, I'm just lookin' for someplace not quite as far - and I know
north central NM & AZ have a lot of PD's.

I'm looking to see how many of us are in the southwest that
would try for a more local shoot...

Where in NM are you??

The wife would shoot me first, but there could be the Great PD Circuit.  Start or end in Hooker, OK then to AZ, swing up through CO then to WY or SD then home in IL.  I really need to get my reloading bench setup.

I've been thinking of going to Wyoming either before or after the Hooker shoot.  Wyoming doesn't require a license, since PD are considered non game animals.  Been looking at maps of the Thunder Basin area in eastern Wyoming.  If the price of gas stays cheap, I may go for it!

Mike,

I'm in Albuquerque.  I've been shooting PD in the Springer, NM area, can't say I've seen a lot of towns to the south... Where in AZ are you?

Scott,

i'm in Flagstaff.  Off to the west about 70 miles is Seligman.  There are several
large pd towns in that area.   Nothing to compare to wyoming, south dakota
or oklahoma but good enough for a day of shooting here and there.

Mike,

It sounds like an easy enough drive - west on I-40 for about 6 hours or so...

I'm a native of Tempe, can't say I've ever been to Seligman though.  Every time we drove to Vegas, we went up through Wickenburg.

If you're interested in getting out for a shoot next spring, let's try and put something together.

I'd be interested in trying to make any Spring or Summer PD shoot within 6-8 hours of the 4 Corners area (NM, AZ, CO, UT). Both my 20 year old daughter and niece have been wanting to go.  My niece was 14 when she drew an Oryx tag for the AFB at Alamogordo, NM.  She was shooting a 300 Win Mag (still does) and bagged a nice trophy, which is now mounted in her room, next to her brown bear, deer, and elk.  I suspect she has something a little smaller for prairie poodles.  I'd be bringing my 225, 220, and M1A.

300 Win Mag for prairie dogs...hmmm...yep, that might be a bit of overkill!  ;)

Hey Mike,

I've been to the '06 shoot when I lived in TX.  Sure miss whacking those little guys.  I've also been to Seligman but not lately.  Heard the PD towns there were wiped out.  Anyways I'm in SE AZ now and ready to for a trip up north for a few days.  Let me know if you plan to head out there and I'll do my best to go.  I know a couple of others who would go, too.

Thanks.
