How do XTP's work in 357
« on: December 01, 2008, 03:04:37 AM »
I have 2 and 4 inch 357 revolvers that I carry in case I need to shoot a 2, 4 or no leg critter.
I am considering the 140 grain XTP as a do all bullet.
Was wondering how well they expand and if they will work at 38 special and at magnum velocities.
Also can you re-comend a low flash powder for short barrels? Thanks Hank

I have shot quite a few XTP 140's out of my magnums, and they seem to shoot really good. I have done water jug tests on them, and they expanded as well as anything else. As far as low flash powder, you might try Titegroup. You may not get as much velocity as the slower burning powders, but it may cut down on muzzle flash.

Check out Speer's .357 135 Gr Gold Dot Short Barrel    Item #4014   It's recommended in either cartridge.  I've loaded it in a 3" .357 and get good expansion in wet newsprint or compacted snow.

On hogs....well...awesome.  If I didn't have so many hydrashocks I'd use the XP, though they were originally designed for hunting I think.

125 grain JHP's. Winchester, Federal, or Remington. Don't worry about the powder flash.

XTP's on hogs = BACON! IMHO, they work wonderfully.

Critter, he is asking about defense use, not hunting. But, I agree, I would probably use the 140 XTP if hungry enough for pork. Or a baseball bat, depending on how close the boar was......
