Public land combat course
« on: December 01, 2008, 11:06:29 AM »
I got up early Fri. and went to a site I hunt on Corp. of Engineers land.  The rules are, you must have a permit, you must use shotgun or muzzle loader, and all other Ga. laws apply.  Someone was in the area I wanted to hunt, so I went further up the road and opposite the road and took a stand on an old logging road.  Just about daybreak, it sounded like war had broken out on the opposite side of the paved road.  Multiple people firing multiple shots very rapidly.  Semi auto shotguns?

After a while things quieted down, and I noticed a group of does making their way timidly down the paved road.  I was no more than 75 yards away.  I sat still, hoping some would turn down the old logging road I was on, when someone from the other side of the road cut loose at them, shooting across the paved road, and right at me.  Luckily I was in a depression and the rounds were going 4-6' over me.  As I belly flopped behind the biggest tree close to me, I noticed that a round passed completely through a 10" pine, blowing bark out the other side.

The rounds kept coming, the deer are running, some toward me, and I finally fired my ML in the air to announce my presence.  The shots stopped.  I eased out from my hole and made my way up to the road, scared, and getting mad.  A youngster about 20 came from out the brush holding an AK with a 30 round mag, looking like he was mad at me for interfering with his business.  He had no hunter orange, had an illegal weapon, loaded with FMJ ammo, and after talking to him, he had no Corp. permit.

I was steadily getting madder.  I do this when I am scared, first fright, then anger.

No, I didn't lose it.  I didn't hit him with my rifle, (thought about it).  I didn't call the law.  It would have taken 45 min. for them to arrive, if then.  I just left.

It is folks like this that ruin it for all of us.  What do we do?

I have a couple of friends that used to hunt on Fort Gordon land up around Augusta. They told a story not much different than yours a few years back. One of the guys were up in a climber about 20 feet up,orange vest and cap were on. My buddy said someone fired twice and missed. The deer ran a short distance and stopped. The deer was between him and the guy that shot. When the guy seen the deer stop he opened fire again. My friend normally keeps his composure and handles things well. This time he didn't. He said the man doing the shooting was in his 50s. Just goes to show that grown folks are stupid too sometimes. Neither of my friends hunt there anymore.
