My favorite H&R
« on: December 01, 2008, 01:58:47 PM »
This is a 30" barreled 12 gauge which I dummied up as a faux muzzleloader. I used this as a stage prop while doing my mountainman poetry routine and fired black powder blanks in parades. It also does pretty well on the trap field.
It also has a 20 gauge barrel, one of the old light weight versions, with similar full length fore stock with which I've hunted quite a bit.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

That is one unique looking shotgun.  I cut my 28" Pardner to a straight stock then refinished the forearm and the stock which gave it a long primitive look but nothing like yours.  Good work.

The forend was simply routed out of a scrap of "miscellaneous hardwood" and the ramrod is, of course, purely cosmetic and not removable.

WOW, looks great!  Nice work coyotejoe!  I hope that when you're not shooting it that it's out on display somewhere.

Did you make the trigger guard as well, or did you fit one from somthing else?

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

The triggerguard came from a supplier of muzzleloading gun parts. The rear sight is from a pistol but I don't recall which one, I built this up maybe 15 years ago. It is attached with one screw and some JB Weld. I opened the notch to a wide "U" which doesn't interfere with swinging on birds but still provides a good reference for slug shooting. However, I've found the recoil of 12 gauge factory slugs to be pretty brutal and much prefer the 20 gauge barrel for slug shooting. ;D I have made up some 12 gauge handloads with a .648" roundball loaded inside a 12 gauge plastic shotcup with velocity down around 1100 fps and those are much more pleasant to fire and still carry plenty of punch and accuracy for 50 yard shots.

Aren't all H&Rs "beaters", I thought that's what they were made for. ;D
