Big Buck Down!!!!
« on: December 02, 2008, 06:01:02 AM »
I got my biggest buck ever, an 11 point, this morning at about 8:20!!

I saw him last night with a small doe but he about 50 yards away and 30 yards onto property I didn't have permission to hunt on.  This morning I got in the same stand with hopes he would come my way.  I'd been in my stand about 20 minutes when two does walked by but neither offered a shot.  Then they passed by again still with no shot opportunity.  A little while later a doe walked by at about 25 yards and I was about to shoot when I saw another deer following her, and it was the big guy you see in the pictures! He was about 25 yards through thick brush and my first shot didn't make it to him he took off and when he slowed to a trot I shot again with the same results.  My third shot was at a dead run and it went through both shoulders and the heart. He did the dirt dive (or maybe the snow dive) 5 yards later.  Definitely no ground shrinkage, more like ground growage!!!  He is a main frame 8 with a split brow tine on the right side and 2 kickers off the left G2.

Great deer man. Awesome tine length on that rascal.

Nice buck!  What did you take him with?

John Keyes: Its was super cold!! Like less that 30 degrees, I glad the wind died down before I got to the woods! My fingers were frozen! It probably didn't help that I accidentally left my gloves in my truck all night the day before.

Siskiyou: I got him with a 12 gauge Remington 870 sporting a Hastings barrel and a Bushnell scope. Here in the Buckeye State we can only hunt with slug guns, muzzleloaders, and pistols shooting straight walled cartridges. I shoot 2-3/4" Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs. And they really did a number on him. I think the only reason he made it 5 yards is because he had momentum from running.

I have deep respect for the M870 and slugs.

Good shooting! :)
