On the first day of Christmas...okay the second day
« on: December 02, 2008, 02:39:17 PM »
I heard a knocking at my back door and went to see who was there.  When I opened the door ,there stood the guy in the big brown truck with this box under his arm.

THE BOX

He made me sign and gave me the box and I took it in house to open it.

OPENED BOX

Great, a box of ghost poop.  I rummaged around a bit and found something.

SOMETHING

I drug the thing out and sat it down.

THE THING

I opened it up and, lo and behold...

I know Ho, hum another Dom Dictator. Everybody's got one of those.

DOM DICTATOR

Nope, not just another Dom Dictator.  This one is different, there hasn't been one like this before.

LOOK AGAIN

Can you figure out what's different?

Seacoast Guys and Dom are not elegible to play.

That's what I was thinking. The inside of the bore does have a yellowish tinge to it.

Or it could just be a trick of the light...

Great, a box of ghost poop.

I can understand your disappointment. It looks like you already had bunch outside.....  :D  :D  :D

As, for the Dictator.  It looks a bit larger as the can sits deeper in the bore. Also, the leverage handles are permanently attached.
If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

Kinda doubt that the guy in the brown suit was able to deliver that one.  Looks like it is beer can bore versus golf ball bore.

Douglas,
Great to see you received it ok.  Looks like you painted it bronze. ;)  Thanks again.

intoodeep,  Those handles are removable and the axle is mounted on a cam so the traversing roller can engage/dis-engage.

Well, mine is golf ball size bored out to can diameter and weights maybe 40 lbs. I see yours is scaled up a tad and weighs probably ~80 lbs?

Be sure to tie it down when you fire it - It might move 1/4" or so unrestrained...

All if the Dictators on Dom's website have the lifting eye.

I did notice that this one is perceptibly larger than the sodacan-bore Dictator on the website, and the bore is deeper relative to the diameter.

You won't find this one list on Dom website...yet?  CARPENTER'S REPLICA  ARTILLERY

The powder chamber is 1 inch so the maximum charge will be 185 grains of Cannon Grade powder.

Yes I will see if I can fling some cans...120 grains for 100 yards huh.  I'll start with that. I will be shooting cans at first but next spring I will change over and use this.

eod20 what doyou need a larger powder chamber for?

I get the 100 yards with portland cement and gravel mixed in it. We tried mortar mix and it didnt go 40 feet with the same 120 grains . the mortar alone doesnt weigh enough . The cement mix has to weigh heavy with rock.  Yes I would like to see this same mortar., its tough! I want one ., however I am now officially without my Rooter Service., its a from riches to rags story now. Pretty much I got what I got......., maybe ? Anyway I love this new Dictator ., Its PERFECT....................., I like that mold too.

you said you were getting 100 yards with 120 grains    i want to shoot farther than that     i do like the mould    the further the better     what would be a safe max charge to get the greatest distance in that setup      is there that much weight differance between the cement mix and mortar mix filled cans  and how do you think sand filled would work   i was thinking of using concrete filled and hardened cans or pvc sections filled and hardened then painted safty orange to locate later      i want one of those Dictator's it is great

Ask him if he'll make you one. He does a lot of stuff not listed on his website. He's building me something custom now.

I think mine was the 1st pop can dictator. When I asked him about making it, he said no problem...

eod20,

I take it you've not shot these mortars before.  How far do you want to shoot?

The recommend maximum safe load for the one inch diameter chamber 185 grains.  This chamber will hold substantially more.  The Manufacturer recommends 250 grs of FFG for ball load and 700 grs. for a salute.  These are hefty charges and should be adequate to please any one.

This is were I start my safety lecture.  The old timers here are groaning and heading for cover now.

First the manufacturers recommend load. There is no doubt that this cannon will shoot this load all day long.  Day in, Day out. You shot 10 rounds/cans of cement of 250 grs everyday for a week and you are first going to be throughly bored, but second you are going to find your carriage has loosened up. That load is going to beat on the carriage pretty good.

As to being throughly bored.  When you launch a can with 250 grains it is very quickly disappear out of sight.  Fun stuff, yes.  I'll shoot one or two out my gun...you have to. But after a while it quickly becomes boring.   And it is unsafe unless you can see with your own eyes where the can will land.  It's just like shooting any gun you have to know where your round will land.  In my case I will know where my cans land and I will know there are no people in my impact zone. I can see that.

I sure would not be shooting a can out of sight into the brush or trees, even on my own property.  If there is someone or something out there and you hit them you will held responsible, even if they are trespassing.  If you have been paying attention to the news lately, prosecutors are taking dim view of careless acts with guns.  A man shooting at a deer killed a small child in house on nearby properety and is being charged with a crime.  Another rman who shot at movement in a tree and wounded another hunter, has been sentenced to prison for a criminal act.  I can't imagine the County DA would hesitate one second to prosecute a person who killed or injured someone with a cannon.

My only reason for my constant preaching about safety with these guns is for the preservation of our sport.  So if you have stuck with me this far and I haven't scared you away, what to do.

Trust me when I say it's fun to fire a big charge and send the can out of sight. But, and a big but it is, it's only half the fun of firing a can with a reduced load and watch it fly all the way to a target and see it impact.  Seeing the impact is a lot more fun.  Firing your mortar, hearing the thump as a popcan full of cement flies out of your mortar.  It goes up, up, up then just seems to hang there. You won't believe how long it seems to hang there.    Then it starts getting bigger and bigger and bigger and splashes down in the stock pond and kicks up a 20 foot geyser of water, that soaks everyone.   Or it hits out in the dry field and kicks up a cloud of dust.  Try hitting the old stump or the rock out cropping out in the field.  Oops need a little more right windage.  Round was short so you add some powder and then it goes long.  I got to shoot a 64 Ford Falcon one time.

The guys here even invented a cannon shooting bingo game...they had a good time shooting their mortars to play that.  They learned how to aim so they could hit their target...okay so they learned to aim to get closer to their target.  They also learned how little powder it took to move the impact point a  long ways.

The N-SSA guys have a competition where they fire mortar rounds at a stake at 100 yards. I believe they fire 7 rounds and then measure the closest 5 rounds and the team with the shortest accumulated distance wins.

I have given this lecture before to several of the regulars here and they took me at my word and are still here and some will even say I am right.

Okay, lecture over, have fun but do it safely.

Double D   you just go right ahead and keep preaching safety   you have the experience   and those who have less  (me) will always stop to hear what you have to say    i come from a service background as the name implies  (eod20)  with that as a starting point and all my experience 100 yards just sounded short range   and as you have surmised   no i have not fired any cannon of this type   just service models   and i do need to adjust that it is a differant world    no one out there to call the rounds onto   this is for fun    i do and will listen to you and all the others here with more experience than i    and someday i may still be here to be an "old timer" with experience   not a headline and runner up for the Darwin award    when i make an asinine statement just push me back on the right path    help is always welcome    i want to sit down and do the math for kinetic energy for one of these cans    about 2 lbs you think??   at terminal velocity      eod 20

The gun is a Mk IV reworked as a High Power rifle.  It has been rebarreled with a Shillen barrel and is chambered in 375 Flanged 2 1/2 NE. Has a BSA 4A , 2nd model adjustable rear sight and an unknown maker front sight similar to the Lyman 17.

I haven't done much work with the gun yet.  It shoots 1 1/4 groups at 100 yards right now.

When I go to the range to shoot canons this spring, I will be take this rifle also.  I want to see how it shoots at longer ranges.
