.475 Linebaugh Contender?

Question for you Contender Guru's....

Is the Contender frame strong enough to handle a .475 Linebaugh barrel?  Ive got a Freedom Arms in .475 and really enjoy the cartridge.  Im thinking a 14" barreled .475 w/a scope would be a great hunting set-up. 

Has anyone tried this caliber in a Contender or Encore handgun?

No, the contender is a 40,000 psi pressure rated frame, and the 475 is 48,000.  Don't do it.

I know that you like this cartridge, and are probably set up for reloading, but there are several ballistically acceptable choices that'll have superior terminal performance in a hunting rig for the contender.  The 35 remington comes to mind, or the good ol' 45-70 if you like the big bore stuff.  Plus, these kick a little less.

Have you tried the 209 45 ml barrel?  Not as heavy a hitter, but a riot to shoot.

Thanks for your answers to my question.  I knew the contender was limited as to the loads it could handle, just didn't know where the .457 linebaugh fit into the equation. 

As for alternative bbls...yep, I like the big bores.  Maybe I'll go for the 45/70.  Im set up to load for that as well.  Ive got one in a Ruger #1 that I enjoy now. 

My black powder choice is a .50 cal.  I enjoy sending round-balls down the tube.

Feeling a compulsive need to say what you most likely already know,  Contenders are not designed to take the pressures of a Number 1 load in 45/70.  Trap Door levels are what are normally recommended.

Silvertp, I have one in an Encore. It started life as a 480 Ruger, and I had it rechambered to the 475 Linebaugh. All custom 12 inch, muzzle brake, 475 Linebaugh engraved on barrel, as well aa a bear hear engraved on the top of the barrel and totally reblued. Looks and shoots great.

Keith L...never hurts to restate safety related information about firearms capabilities to digest heavy loads.  Not many firearms will handle 45/70 loads like a ruger #1.   ;D

Redhawk1....sounds like a wonderful custom encore.  Have you worked up any loads for it yet?  If so what kinds loads are working for you in the 12" bbl?  Im just thinking that that length bbl would make the .475 L a real stopper round.

Silvertp, yes I worked up a very accurate load for the 475 Linebaugh barrel. I am using a 400 gr. hard cast bullet from Montana bullet works, with 26.0 gr. of H 110 and Federal 155 primers. At 50 yards I get 1 inch groups of a rest using a Ultra-dot Match-dot Red-dot sight.

Ooooooo kay!  So are these guys that are hunting hogs with "rimfires" hunting from tree stands, or do they just want to get chewed / roughed up a bit?   :o

Ive butchered a lot of beef by poking a 22 long rifle slug into their skull, but this is at close range - not under hunting conditions.  Think I'd stick w/my Linebaugh for hog hunting.  I'd guess the .475 bullet would have a better chance of leaving a blood trail than would any of the rimfires I am familiar with.

There is one thread in the H&R Rimfire area and one in the Rimfire rifles.  I know it can be done, but I guess I wouldn't/

When I was a young'n(a couple o' years ago  ;) :D) we used to kill hogs just after Thanksgiving every year.  Daddy would take a 22 rifle and almost lay on the ground infront of a hog and shoot up at an angle right between his eyes....Bang-Flop.....dead hog.  One year it was decided that I had become of age and was given the honor of doing the shooting.  Even with a great amount of instruction on exactly where to hit him, I never did get the bang-flop.  All I succeded in doing was making the hogs mad.  Dad had to finish the job with a .38 in the ear.
   Now mind you, these were domestic pigs....I really don't think I would want to mess with wild hogs with anything close to a rimfire .22.  Walt  ::)
